Disadvantages: Average impression throughout
"Cross Country Racing", often abbreviated "CCR", is a racing game for the Gameboy Color console. In it, players choose from a variety of "rally" style cars to race against computer opponents on circuits based around the world.
Gameplay is like most other racing games released for handheld consoles. The player is presented their vehicle from a "following" camera view and responds to on-screen cues regarding twists, turns and hazards that might lie ahead. As per other racing games the main objective is to complete the designated course in the highest position possible. There is some element of customization in that the player will be prompted as to driving conditions and can alter their on-car settings prior to racing, adjusting settings to road conditions at the time (for example equipping snow tyres for arctic conditions). There is also a two player option on this game which requires a separate game-link cable. Controls implemented for this title are "A" for acceleration, "B" for brake and the arrow keys to guide car movement.
Graphics are average for a Gameboy Color console. There appeared to be some areas which could have used additional detailing, for example the rear view of the car appears slightly "dotty", but all graphical aspects of this title appeared acceptable to me. Audio is also standard and did not feature much variation on the standard "buzzing" sound which signals car acceleration.
This is most likely a title that fans of racing genre games would enjoy. It does not feature much by the way of innovation but is a good package for what was presented overall. It's also likely that the second player option would be a redeeming quality for this title. I did not personally enjoy this game but would be able to suggest it to players who might otherwise enjoy it.
Summary: For fans of the racing genre
