Advantages: Graphics
Disadvantages: Simple Gameplay
"Gex 3: Deep Pocket Gecko" is a video game released for the Gameboy Color console in 1999 by Eidos Interactive. It is based on a long standing series of the same name and is the final installment for the Gameboy console. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
Gameplay reflects a typical platform title. The player controls Gex, a carefree gecko lizard, who finds himself sucked into a television satellite and must guide him on various tasks to secure his freedom. These tasks are similar in nature and involve defeating tyrannical boss characters to progress further between the stages ranging from arctic snows to deep oceans, all of which he can interact with including riding a snowboard and swimming. There is generally little difficulty in the title and can be completed with ease. The controls are particularly good but his main attack is a tail swipe which requires addition time in setting up an effective strike against an enemy due to the perceived time lag in between hitting the attack button and Gex being able to turn and launch his tail.
The graphics of this title are very well animated. Other sources indicate that there are 4500 animated frames in this title which leads to a very flowing and glossy display. The colouring is excellent throughout and makes use of a wide variety to fill the display at all times. I also found the soundtrack to be of a good standard with numerous alterations in between each stage in terms of musical scores.
Overall, I would recommend Deep Pocket Gecko to prospective buyers. Its graphical implementation alone is a selling feature as such fluid-like animations are not frequently seen. It is not a particularly hard game to beat but remains a visually enjoyable experience for the duration.
Summary: Thumbs up
