"Jimmy White's Cue Ball" is a video game released for the Gameboy Color console in 2000 by Vatical Entertainment. It is a sports genre game with billiards being represented. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The gameplay in this title includes the three most popular table-top varieties including eight ball billiards, nine ball billiards and snooker. There does not appear to be any storyline surrounding this title and it is just simply a matter of playing billiards or snooker against a computer opponent. A player may also add a second human opponent to the game by physically sharing the console in between shots. Aiming and shooting is typical to other billiard titles. A player will guide a small crosshair to the area where he or she wishes to shoot and then activate a power gauge to designate the amount of force behind the shot. For further strategic play, a player may also select the area of the ball to strike to allow for different rotations and spins during the shot. It is not a particularly difficult title and does not present any sort of learning curve when playing for the first time.
The graphics of this title are presented from a top down perspective which looks on to the table in play. I did find the balls to be slightly "blocky" in appearance; not featuring a typical sphere-like shape but coming across as almost square like. Otherwise the display is appropriately coloured to feature a green table with brown wood surrounds and accurate balls such as the white cue ball and black number eight. The soundtrack is virtually non existent with the only noticeable effect being simple "pops" during ball strikes and a similar sound when one is pocketed.
Overall, Cue Ball is a very simply put together billiards game which could offer some enjoyment to those who enjoy the sport. It is likely that the second player option would be seen as more entertaining and offering the bulk of the game's replay value.
Summary: Thumbs in the middle
