Advantages: Simulation style
Disadvantages: Tiny players, Simple audio
"Madden NFL 2000" is a video game released for the Gameboy Color console in 1999 by THQ. It is a sports title with American football being represented. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The "Madden" series is a long standing name in American football games. NFL 2000 marks the third appearance on the handheld console, though its first in colour technology. The game features similar rules and requirements of the National Football League and follows their requirements regarding fouls and other items of interest. Gameplay is somewhat slow in this title. To successfully engage an ally or opponent, it is through a process of menus and windows which suggest courses of action. To make a pass the player will be presented with numerous windows which suggest available players and the player can then choose who the ball should go to. Most of the play is through these menus and the only on screen action is running up and down the field. This can present some learning curve in the initial stages of play but is quickly mastered. It is not a particularly difficult game to play but for a sports game comes across as rather slow and technical as opposed to more action packed.
The graphics of this title are presented from an isometric perspective which allows clear view of most of the field throughout play. The characters are well animated but come across as being very scaled down miniatures rather than true to life football players. It is difficult to follow many plays due to this perceived tininess. The audio is standard to most sports games; most of the game will feature a simple white noise "hiss" to suggest the roar of the crowd and that is the bulk of sound effects.
Overall, Madden 2000 could be regarded as a simulation due to its slower play as opposed to a sports game. It is an average title at best and may only engage those who are truly enveloped in interest with American football.
Summary: Thumbs in the middle
