Advantages: Features popular personalities

Disadvantages: Gameplay, Graphics, Audio

"Mary-Kate and Ashley: Get a Clue!" is a video game released for the Gameboy Color console in 2000 by Acclaim. The title features the popular Mary-Kate and Ashley personalities in the United States. In the United States, the game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel which deemed the title suitable for all ages.

The gameplay revolves around solving puzzles and gathering "clues". The player controls both Mary-Kate and Ashley in certain situations which beckon their apparent skills. Ashley is used to activate switches which unlock certain areas of the puzzle whereas Mary-Kate attacks any nearby enemies by throwing her pet dog. With the constant switching in between characters the game can become rather confusing and frustrating. It is required that both characters remain "alive" during the puzzle sequence so the player will be constantly required to switch between characters and move the respective girl to a safe location while trying to activate any nearby switches to gain the clue piece. Due to this there is more difficulty in the game design rather than the game itself.

The graphics come across as being very quickly produced and not showing much effort on behalf of the developers; there is a strong element of pixelation throughout the game. The detailing is also rather poor with the characters coming across as almost stick figure in appearance as opposed to any sort of being. The audio is also of a comparably poor standard. The developers attempted to insert vocal overlays from the duo but the bitrate is at such a low setting that the words are distorted beyond comprehension.

Overall, I would not recommend this game to prospective buyers. The game's mechanics pose too much of a challenge in itself to appeal to a younger audience and this is combined with poor graphical and audio implementations.

Summary: Thumbs down
