Adding to the Pokéfrenzy started by Pokémon Red and Blue, Pokémon Yellow hits the Game Boy with new features, spotlighting the Pokémon , Pikachu. Pokémon Yellow, which is compatible with Red and Blue, is an excellent addition to the series.

Although it sports basically the same plot as Pokémon Red and Blue, Yellow differentiates itself from those titles from the outset. You no longer choose from three different Pokémon; instead, Professor Oak gives you Pikachu as your first Pokémon. Mirroring Pikachu's relationship with his trainer in the cartoon series, the Game Boy Pikachu refuses to live inside a Poké Ball, and follows you around. When he is part of the group of Pokémon that you carry around, you can see him following just behind you onscreen. It is possible to turn around and check on his mood, which is reflected in the expression on his face in a pop-up box and in the tone of his "voice." Yes, Pikachu talks to you--as much as the Game Boy's limited sound hardware will allow. Pikachu's mood actually figures into the gameplay, as certain characters will view his disposition as a reflection on your training skills, and decide whether or not to give you Pokémon based on that.

Another addition to this installment of the Pokémon games is the appearance of Team Rocket villains Jessie and James, and their Pokémon--Ekans, Koffing, and Meowth. Some Pokémon, such as Butterfree, Mankey, Scyther, Pinsir, Vaporeon, and Charizard, will now be more balanced than their Red and Blue incarnations, learning some skills at different times and new attacks not seen before. The game is also compatible with the Game Boy Printer, allowing players to print out Pokémon profiles, their Pokédex, the contents of their storage boxes, and a diploma when they have collected all 150 Pokémon.

There is stil some room for improvement but the forth coming release of POkemon GOld and Silver should provide everything the game needs.
