The detailing is sharp and shows considerable effort in the "colour enhanced" versions with use of a wide palette of colours. I found the audio to be somewhat standard as far as Gameboy titles are with some pleasant tunes to suit a quicker paced action game well. While the game may not be particularly difficult, R-Type DX offers a solid g...more

Premium Review R-Type DX (GB) (348 words)

Rating:

"R-Type DX" is a video game released for the Gameboy Color console in 1999 by Nintendo. It is a part of a long standing series of the same name. In the United States, the ESRB panel rated the game "E" which deemed it suitable for all ages. The title is released as an action title; more specifically the "shoot em up" type. There is little by the way of an introduction stor.y and wider reading revealed that the player is sent into outer space to combat a pending alien invasion; not particularly remarkable but does create an enjoyable setting. The player has the option to select five modes of play in this title which feature ports of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review R-Type DX (GB): Blast him!!!! (175 words)

Rating:

R-Type is a brilliant slice of retro shoot em up action. There are essentially 5 games on the pak, R-Type and R-Type 2 in the original black and white, the same games specially coloured, and R-Type DX which combines the 2 games into a seamless alien blast fest. You have to fight against an armada of vicious aliens from the Bydo empire, piloting just one little ship. But - you get some wicked power ups to help you on your way. R-Type is a side-scrolling shooter, with waves of aliens coming at you, and you need quick reflexes and a quicker thumb to survive! The action is fast, the game is wonderfully challenging, and the graphics are clear and ...  Read the complete review
