Advantages: Simple to play, pretty graphics, clever level design

Disadvantages: Lack of enemy types and boss fights

One of the few games to make use of the Game Boy Color's infrared communications port though I've not been able to check this feature out for myself.

There's a 3D rendition of Rayman in the introduction which, for a GBC is pretty impressive. Luckily, the quality of graphics do not let up in this game - through the light of my GBA SP Rayman looks great! The detail, the use of colours and animation are all fine. However, at times it's not clear whether something is part of the background or not though you'll soon pick up on this.

Somewhat of a slow starter is the music. It was not until I had reached the musically themed (strangely enough) Airy Tunes levels that I would leave the music on. Towards the end of the game there were remixes of the earlier tunes, but by then I had felt accustomed to the music.

Rayman does not learn many moves throughout the game but as the controls are spot-on in their responsiveness you'll get to grips with them quickly. The game plays at a measured pace, yet it manages to provide fairly tight platforming, with the levels - seemingly designed with efficiency and are not too confusing - playing a pivotal role.

The number of enemy types are low in this game and there is a sole boss fight (predictably at the end) so there's not much to Rayman other than pure platforming. There were two levels which did stand out, one of these being where you have to avoid contact with a clone which mimicked your every move and another where the roles of the left and right on the d-pad are reversed!

Rayman is an easy game to pick-up and play, and is suited to the casual gamer for it does gets slighty tricky towards the end. The increase in difficulty is about right, and you'll need to be a bit careful with that 10 entry password. A minor problem is that you have to finish the game before you can choose which level it is you want to (re)play, though you'll have to search high and low if you want 100% game completion - which I happily managed - so there is decent replay value here. A great platform game for the Game Boy Color.

Summary: Rayman for Game Boy Color
