Advantages: Standard gameplay
Disadvantages: Graphics, Audio
"Star Wars Episode I Racer" is a video game released to the Gameboy Color console in 1999 by Lucas Arts. It is based on the popular video game of the same title released to the Nintendo 64 console. The game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel in the United States which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The game is a typical release for the racing genre and is presented from a top down perspective. In the beginning, the player only has access to the main character in Anakin Skywalker but will eventually "unlock" other characters as he or she progresses. It is fairly simple in difficulty and offers little by the way of any sort of challenge. There is only one opponent on the course at a time and it is the player's objective to place first by completing the course as fast as possible. To further simplify the racing process the player has the option to use a "turbo boost" for further acceleration, although this does affect the vehicle's "energy charge" which must be kept at a higher level during race for competitive playing.
Graphics wise, Racer is a mediocre at best title. The animations are very fast to suggest a quick paced race but this does lead to some element of pixelation during acceleration and moments of top speed. I found the detailing of the race cars to be rather poor and not offering a rounded "pod" like shape as suggested in the films, but rather coming across as oblong cylindrical shapes. The audio is also of a comparatively sub standard level with there being slight "buzzing" sounds to suggest engine acceleration.
Overall, Racer is an average at best title which offers little replay value to the player. It may engage fans of the recent Star Wars films for a short period but once the initial appeal has expired would not likely be played again.
Summary: Thumbs in the middle
