Advantages: Great gameplay, Loads of extras, Well put together
Disadvantages: Quite tough, Small screen can cause problems
I received my first games console at the age of 7, the NES, and with it came Super Mario Bros. Unlike the games of today that only hold your interest for a few weeks, this one kept me going for over a year. So, you can imagine my excitement when I saw that it was being re-released for the GBC. This deluxe edition contains the original game converted perfectly onto the small screen, with every detail as I remember it. I wasn't sure that I would be prepared to play through it again, having done so - several times - all those years ago. But the timeless gameplay still grabs you, and again I was enjoying it once more. There are a huge number of extras included, too, which really help to increase the lifespan of the game. The challenge mode asks the player to go through each level, collecting hidden coins and trying to beat a pre set score. This is tough even for old hands like me! As you play, you unlock other things, such as a race between you and boo (the ghost). This is OK, but gets dull quickly. The real gem, which I am surprised Nintendo didn't advertise, is the inclusion of the 'Lost Levels', a sequel that was only ever released in Japan. This is - again - very tough, with more puzzle-based play. There are also a few other interesting touches, such as a photo album that fills up as you accomplish in-game tasks, and which can be printed on a GB printer, and a calendar. There are few problems, although due to the smaller screen size, not all of the play view is visible. This isn't normally a problem, though. And I suppose the whole package could be too challenging for some. The fact is, however, that the gameplay is truly timeless, and the number of extras included makes this an essential purchase.
