Advantages: Simple gameplay
Disadvantages: Short appeal
"Tom and Jerry" is a video game released to the Gameboy Color console in 1999 by Majesco. It is a direct "port" of an original Gameboy title of the same time but remastered for Color technology. The game received a rating of "E" by the ESRB panel in the United States which deemed it suitable for all ages.
The story is not immediately clear and required inspection of the game manual to see that Jerry is attempting to locate his cousin Tuffy. Otherwise, the game is that of a very simple platform title geared towards younger children. The player must simply guide Jerry from the beginning of the stage to the end and must avoid obstacles, such as Tom the cat lurking within garbage bins and bottomless pits, by jumping while collecting various items for bonus points. The level design is very repetitive and offers little variation to the player, with the same mundane tasks being repeated throughout ten stages of game play. There is little by the way of difficulty because of this perceived simplicity and general repetitiveness.
Visually, Tom and Jerry is pleasing and offers an acceptable range of colour applied within the display for a remastered pre-existing game. I find the animations to be smooth and making good use of a more updated technology. Character visuals are also acceptable and accurately reflect their intended purpose. The sound is not particularly noteworthy but does seem to compliment the game appropriately.
I would be hesitant about recommending this game to prospective buyers. It is a very repetitive "run and jump" game which has an obvious target market of younger children. It is possible that this game could appeal to fans of the motion picture of the same name, but I wouldn't suggest that appeal to be for extended periods of time.
Summary: Thumbs in the middle
