Disadvantages: none!
Ive just discovered Lovefilm.com, a service where you can rent DVDs online and they'll send them to your door. I'll be reviewing the service shortly however, this review is of the first movie Ive rented from them, Finding Nemo.
As I write there there are 101 other reviews on finding Nemo, clearly I havent read them all. But my op has a wee twist. Im doing it as a watch! Ill watch a scene then report back! Clever me!
FIRST THOUGH - THE DETAILS....
A father-son underwater adventure featuring Nemo, a boy clownfish, stolen from his coral reef home. His timid father must then search the ocean to find him with the help of the darling Dory. As its a childrens film, expect morals and values to be hidden deep in the core of the movie. Also expect cuteness and funnies!
Heres a little breakdown of the major characters, and the actors...
Albert Brooks .... Marlin
Ellen DeGeneres .... Dory
Alexander Gould .... Nemo
Willem Dafoe .... Gill
Brad Garrett .... Bloat
Allison Janney .... Peach
Austin Pendleton .... Gurgle
Stephen Root .... Bubbles
Vicki Lewis .... Deb/Flo
Joe Ranft .... Jacques
Geoffrey Rush .... Nigel
Andrew Stanton .... Crush
Elizabeth Perkins .... Coral
Nicholas Bird .... Squirt
Bob Peterson .... Mr. Ray
The film was made by Pixar, and while Im talking about them....does anybody else really love their little animation at the start of movies where the cute little lamp bounces up and down on the I?...no?..just me then.....
ANYWAY.....
The film opens by introducing Marlin and Coral, who are the presently unborn Nemos parents. Sadly Coral and the 399 other little unborn Clown fish are scoffed by a mean and greedy swordfish type thing, luckily Marlin is left unharmed along with one tiny little solitary egg....
Cut to a few years down the line and its time for Nemos first day at school, Marlin is super protective
of him after losing his wife and other children and doesnt want him to be alone without his father there to protect him.
Also, Nemo has a deformed fin thats much smaller than his other fin, his dad calls it his 'lucky' fin - showing Nemo and any watching children that theres nothing wrong or different about disability. The other children in Nemos class have little things different about them such as allergies, showing that all children are different! Good stuff!
Marlins constant lecturing of Nemo about how the ocean 'isnt safe' might help to bring home to watching kiddywinks what their parents have been trying to drum into them about keeping safe outside the house - "Hold my fin!"
An act of definace against his fathers orders gets Nemo caught by some divers and taken out of the ocean.
In his quest to find Nemo, Marlin meets a lovely little fishy with a short term memory problem. Shes called Dory and joins him in his quest.
Along the way they meet a shark named Bruce whos part of an organisation of sharks who are trying to kick the habit of scoffing little fishies and being all round menaces of the ocean.
Next we discover that Nemo has been placed in a little fish tank in a dentists surgery. He befriends the other members of the tank - which include a hilarious eccentric fish who is obsessed by bubbles and a seagull who makes flying visits.
The prospect of being taken home by the dentists neice Darla - a notorious fish killer, is too much for Nemo and his new buddies to swallow so they hatch an escape plan.
Meanwhile back in the ocean a mask dropped by a diver is providing Marlin and Dory with clues as to where they have to go to find Nemo.
A few more close shaves and near death experienced lead them to the right place.
Meanwhile, back in the tank, Nemo is having some near death experiences of his own as his first escape attemp fails miserably...time to hatch a new plan!
>
So now weve had some scary and tense moments, its time for some cute ones! Marlin and Dory are hitching a ride with some smashing cool turtle dudes and their little cute turtle dude children. Ahh.
Word of mouth spreads the news about the missing Nemo until it reaches the seagull who visits the dentists fish tank, he heads over to the surgery to tell Nemo that his dad is looking for him, just as hes convinced himself that nobody is coming to save him. Bless.
Amazed by the tales of his fathers acts of heroism, Nemo is inspired to try and escape from the tank again. The fishies block the filter of the tank, to force the dentist to clean it, therefore removing the fishies from the tank in the process and enabling their escape. Only things dont go according to plan and the dentist just fits a smashing new tank cleaning system instead.
Next comes one of my favourite bits - Dory attempting to 'speak Whale', its hilarious - really! You need to see this film!
Anyway Marlin and Diry accidentally end up in the whales mouth - abit like in Pinocchio only less sad and depressing, and theres no lighting of fires to male the whale sneeze!..This is a nice whale and he takes Marlin and Dory to Sydney Harbour to where Nemo is being kept.
Nemo is taken out of the tank and bagged up ready to be Darla's next gift and victim. And Marlin and Dory are swallowed by a seagul, noyl for Marlin to be struck with a new determination and so he lodges himself in the gull's throat and chokes him. This causes a fuss which the friendly seagull hears and is alrted to the arrival of Marlin and Dory. He rescues them from some reallllllly annoying birdies and whisks them off to the surgery.
So in the end, after a few more close shaves and abit of drama - which I cant give away because then why would you buy the film? - Nemo is reunited with his dad...aww, bless.
So then, I think we've established that Finding Nemo is a
kickass film, even for the grownups! Buy it for your kids, like, now!
Thanks for reading!
