Advantages: Eye candy, Non frustrating, well just a bit

Disadvantages: Too short

Todays reviews, in magazines, on websites and the like, tend to be more based on personal preference. Lets take magazine A for instance, if one reviewer prefers strategy games to any other, he'll be less likely to give a decent review to say, a racing game.

How does this relate to Luigi's Mansion? Well this game gets some odd reviews. Official Nintendo magazines and such think it's a brilliant game, whereas multiformat media have been saying it's a very poor game.

But I say, it's a game you can sit down and play. No it isn't the best game in the world, but I found it perfect for a "What shall I play" situation (which usually ends up with wasting half an hour trying to decide).
I could just shove LM on and play it, and at times it's great fun.

The story is simple and very thin, Luigi has won a mansion, Mario decides to go there ahead of him to meet Luigi there. But when Luigi arrives at his dream mansion, it turns out to be a creepy haunted house. The lights are all off and Mario is no where in sight.
He encounters a ghost, but is rescued by Professor E. Gadd, an elderly man who lives in a shed outside the mansion. He tells Luigi that the ghosts are taking over and he is too old to stop them. He gives Luigi his ghost catching invention, a vacuum cleaner.

You have to trapse around this place, catching the ghoulies and then the potrait ghosts, who have been set free by the mischievous Boo's (who you also have to catch).
Very simple, catch ghosts in a room to light it and get a key for the next room. There, not to taxing on the brain. Which is good.

The animation is good, like when Luigi is flattened by doors. The lighting effects are brilliant, with shadows, lighting and when ghosts (especially the first portrait ghost) that "disappear" when you shine your light on them, then return when you move away.
The locations are interactive, you can suck towels off r
ails with the poltergust 3000, shake and rattle cabinets, blow out candles. It's all nicely pulled off.

Plus, you'll rarely find yourself in a "What the hell do I do now" moment, as it's pretty straight foward, you even get told what keys go in which door !

Ok, so it's not a long game, but enjoyable while it lasts. Nintendo took a chance putting this as a launch title and I admire their efforts.

But is it as good as Elite or Jet Set Willy?
