Advantages: everything!
Disadvantages: no online play like brawl
Super Smash Bros Melee is perhaps the ultimate crowning achievement for Gamecube. The sequel to the highly popular Super Smash Bros on N64 includes enhanced graphics, more characters, and new exciting games and trials.
You select from a large arsenal of extremely popular characters from various Nintendo classics and most successful games like Mario, Bowser, Link, Ganondorf, Pikachu, Fox, Samus, Roy, etc. We're talking the heavy hitters from games like Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong and so on.
Each character has their own specials and combos but in general the controls are identical so its easy to pick up. You just need to practice with each character to understand the range of their hits and maneuverability. Its also got the typical moves associated in fighting games like blocking, rolling, throwing, etc.
The object in the Super Smash Bros universe isn't to KO your opponent as in traditional fighting games, rather its a all out free for all pitting you against up to 3 other players where the object is to raise eachother's damage percentage then attempt to send your opponent soaring off the screen with a powerful hit.
You get all kinds of items in the battle to restore health, summon Pokémon like Unown to unleash attacks on your foes, star power, fireballs, use baseball bats and all kinds of other items that somehow tie into various Nintendo games starring the playable characters.
Bottom line this game is incredible fun for players of all age groups and skill levels. A lot of my friends actually prefer it over Brawl - the latest game in the series for Wii, finding this to be a bit more balanaced. Melee is much cheaper and you can also play it on the Wii if you wish. Its just mild animated cartoonish violence so I think kids would enjoy it and parents shouldn't gripe much about it. Great gift!

Summary: Hands down, Melee is one of the greatest games Nintendo has released.
