Advantages: contains the original games and the N64 ones, has extra features
Disadvantages: None
As soon as I heard about this special edition I made a special effort to get a hold of a copy, since I wanted to play the original Zelda games. Until the release of this title that would have meant buying a NES console which is Nintendo's first games console released in 1983, and also getting a hold of the two NES Zelda games. Luckily I got a copy of this special edition, which allows you to play them on the Gamecube, along with another two Zelda games for the N64 - Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
This special edition was released in Europe in November 2003 but was not available on general sale. I got my copy by purchasing a new game which allowed me to send away for a copy (in my case it was Mario Kart Double Dash). Although the new game cost me £29.99, I was really getting 5 games here for the price of one. This disc contains the two first ever Zelda games to be released: The Legend of Zelda (released in Europe almost 20 years ago) and it's sequel The Adventure of Link (released in 1988). As of yet I'm still playing the first one which is a pretty challenging game! It may seem outdated when you compare it to Twilight Princess but it's still a classic game, and the one which started the whole Zelda series. Adventure of Link uses a different side-scrolling control system which I've heard critism about but since I haven't played it yet I can't really say for myself what it's like. Both these games are now also available to play on Gameboy Advance but playing them on Gamecube I think is more authentic since the original copies would've been played on TV consoles rather than a handheld console. These games are must haves for Zelda fans and this special edition offers them and more.
It also contains the two N64 Zelda games Ocarina of Time, released in 1998 and often referred to as the greatest game of all time, and it's dark sequel Majora's Mask. As if owning the original Zelda games wasn't enough! Both of these games are highly enjoyable and addictive, with plenty of replay value - I've lost count of how many times I've replayed Ocarina of Time! (see my reviews of these games for more info on the games themselves) Ocarina of Time was also re-released in Gamecube form with Wind Waker along with the Master quest version, but this disc offers you the chance to play it again along with the original classics and Majora's Mask which has become quite rare in it's original N64 form. These games are a real treat: they're visually beautiful and have great soundtracks and storylines and even if you're not a great gaming fan you're sure to enjoy them. Overall, this disc is great either for Zelda fans or as an introduction to the Zelda series. As well as containing these great games there are a couple of extra features on this disc. One is a 20 minute demo of Wind Waker, the Zelda release for Gamecube which came out in the same year this edition was released. The other is a Zelda retrospective which is a sort of trailer showing you how the Zelda series evolved up to the year 2003.
I can recommend this special edition to anyone with an interest in gaming since the Zelda series is one of the most popular gaming series ever. It's also an absolute must for Zelda fans, especially if you don't own a NES console or just can't get your hands on a copy of Majora's Mask. At the moment the only place you seem to be able to buy it is ebay where they sell at around £15 which is a bargain considering everything you get on this game.
Summary: the ultimate zelda collection!
