... of you may well have `put your garden to bed for the year` already but given that the weather has been kinder to us over the last few weeks I have been taking the gentle approach to my end of year tidy up session. Plants and shrubs are like anything else in life, nurture them well and they will repay you ten fold and that is one of my main reasons for putting a layer of Bower s Mix and mulch in and around on top of the soil in the garden borders. My garden borders are filled with shrubs, I find that they are far easier to cope with. Spring may seem to be a long time away it is time to fill those tubs up with a variety of Spring bulbs, the bulbs offer the first dash of colour of the year and I for one always look forward to them blooming. Our local garden centre was busy today, apart from the predictable bedding plants there is little else kicking around at this time of year but the stands are filled with packet upon packet of bulbs of all shapes, sizes and of course species. There is also a very good selection of clay pots and planters on display too so this made the visit worthwhile. J. A. ... love gardens and plants, but weeds are not pleasant, and they can be difficult to control, if like me you refuse to use any chemicals. Sunshine of Africa produce a mulch which is made form the discarded shell of the cocoa bean, so if you purchase this not only will you have the weeds under control, but the aroma from the beds will be adorable! I first saw this used many years ago by the sadly departed Geoff Hamilton, and I also remember Bob Flowerdew, the famous organic gardener using it too.
