Homebase Multi-Purpose Compost
by Ninski1 I have not long moved house and the garden has needed a lot of attention, so I have been spending a lot of time planning and organising what to do and where to put things, we had a partly rotten pergola, which my handy husband has salvaged and turned into to a herb trough for outside the kitchen, so I need something to fill it and whilst ... perusing the isles in Homebase I came across their own brand multi purpose compost, a bag costs £4.99 for 120 litres and at the time it was on a 3 for 2 offer, so car fully loaded and then unloaded by handy, strong husband, as the bags are very heavy and awkward to lift I set about thinking about which herbs, which I had grown from seedlings in the potting shed, I would place where. The compost is designed to be peat free, ideal for all plant growth stages, absorbs water easily and will feed plants for up to 5 weeks. The compost is much like any other I have used, in that it smells earthy, is dark brown in colour and it has a light, crumbly feel, though you do get a few lumps in the bag which will need to be broken up with a fork. I ended up using 1.5 bags in total, and found that with two (me and husband) people we could life the bag and empty it straight into the trough, when I am on my own I tend to cut open the bag and then scoop the compost out, as it is easier that way. I planted coriander, flat leaf parsley, curly parsley, apple mint, garden mint, basil, thyme, oregano and chives. Overall I would give this product 4 stars as all of my herbs have grown well, I have not had any issues with water logging, which I thought I might given the terrible wet weather we have been having and also given that the product absorbs waster easily, so to conclude the compost has performed well and I would repurchased, especially when it is on special offer. Homebase Bark Chips
by bringingsexyback WHAT IS IT? A pack of chopped bark pieces for use in your garden. They can be used for weed control, underneath childrens play equipment or in an ornamental manner. HOW TO USE THE BARK CHIPPINGS You first need to undo the compacted bark to make it into separate pieces, this is easiest done by putting ... the bark where it's required and scraping at it with a garden fork. This loosens the bark from the edges and it gets easier the more you pull off with eventually the lump just collapsing. Then you use a rake to spread it. The depth depends on what you are using it for so look at the guide on the box. WHAT I THINK The bark chippings smell beautiful and woody, they have got a fresh smell that lingers for a long while after you've laid them. They never turn to an earthy or musty smell even after a lot of rain and damp conditions. When it is very hot for a few days after rain the chippings go brittle and you can hear them snapping when you walk on them. I've had this happen with other bark chips but not all of them. I don't think they are soft enough to go under my children's swings because they would not provide a soft enough landing even at 2" deep. I've got them around two trees and along the flower bed to keep weeds out. I have laid it at less than 1" deep so weeds do still come through but I don't like to layer them too deeply to allow sunlight to reach the soil. These chippings have been down for about 6 months through this wet summer and they are still colourful with a fresh appearance. None of them have gone mouldy and the rain and standing water hasn't affected them. The bark chippings are £8.99 for a pack of 120 litres. This is a product where it is easy to underestimate how much you need, I bought two packs and needed another two when I'd started laying them. 5 Dooyoo Stars. Read the complete review |

Homebase Multi-Purpose Compost
by sympatic We have tried a couple of times to get into the whole home composting thing and pretty much both occasions have been a fail, my naive initial belief that you just pile everything in and leave nature to take its course was shown up to be wrong and my other half is away with work too much to be able to do it as gardening is not top of his ... priority list when he is at home. This multi purpose compost from Homebase has to do the trick instead, it costs around the £8-£9 mark for a 120 litre bag which is a decent weight to have to shift so that is definately a job for him. The easiest way to access the contents is to open across the top of the bag, the compost itself can then be removed in fairly solid lumps and then broken down until it crumbles into the smaller fibres that are added to the bedding pots or over the area where I'm ready to plant. It has quite a dry texture so is not really messy to handle however when you water the compost takes on the turgid feel that you would expect. It really does soak up and hold the water, trapping in the mositure that will help the plants to grow and develop. It can be used with seeds and also plants that are established as it is a multi purpose compost. It has a rich dark colour. As far as the results go I cannot complain as we have had a pretty good bloom this year in the garden and given that we do not grow a lot of plants a single bag lasts a decent amount of time. The instructions state that it will last for 4-5 weeks in total and based on my experience that seems to be an accurate claim. It also comes in a smaller 60 litre size as well.
