It is that time of year again, we have a little bit of sunshine and the ants decide to come out to play. Having recently sorted the garden out I must have disturbed a nest and found that I had an army of ants walking not only outside my front door but also in a line across my living room.

I found that they were coming into the house through a tiny crack by the front door, so needed an ant killer that would work fast. I didn't fancy sprinkling ant powder as this would have had to be put inside the porch and didn't want it to make a mess, so I bought Ant Stop! Bait Station from Tesco. It is available in a pack of two Bait Stations from the Gardening section and costs £2.34.

Ant Stop! Bait Station is a round black circle about the site of the top of a Jam jar, with 4 holes for the ants to enter. The Bait Stations are filled with bait, which contain sugar and attracts the ants to the station. The little blighters then think that it is food (how foolish!) and pick up a piece of the bait and carry it back to the nest to feed other ants and larvae in the nest. The bait works as it contains an active ingredient that the ants either ingest or absorbed into their little bodies and kills the ants when they return to the nest.

For maximum effect I used the bait station both indoors and outside as I had found them walking in my living room and were aware of them outside my porch, having disturbed them when digging the garden.

To use the Ant Stop Station indoors, break off each of the four spurs to expose the holes. This allows the ants access to the bait inside the station. All you need to do is place the station close to where you see the ants. One station is normally enough to kill the ants in one nest. For me, where I had ants coming into my house it may mean that there is more than one nest. You will need to check the station regularly (the bait will be visible through the holes) and replace used ones.

For outside use, as above, break off the spurs and place station near the nest. Cover the station with a tile or brick to keep it dry and check the station regularly and replace used ones. For large outdoor nests it is recommended you use two or more stations and this will take longer to kill the ants. I found that using one outside was sufficient. The Bait stations need to be kept dry and also you shouldn't open the station by removing the top.

I left the ant bait stations out for 3 weeks to be on the safe side and the majority of the ants had not returned the next day and all was clear within 4 days. What I like about this product is that unlike ant powders, which kill ants instantly, the ants return the bait to their nest; therefore you aren't left with dead ants around the bait stations.

This product is highly recommended and gets 5 stars from me, as I see no disadvantages with the bait stations as they killed the ants and don't leave a mess. If I see ants again, I would definitely buy this product as Ant Stop! Bait Station is clean and simple to use, doesn't leave a harsh smell, can be used indoors and outdoors, providing it doesn't get wet when outside and stops ant activity within 3-6 days and lasts for up to 3 months. The only thing you would need to be careful about, is making sure that the stations are not picked up by children, incase they place them or their fingers in their mouths after touching the stations.
