So summer has finally turned up. In winter, I admit that I really do not take much or any notice of the garden. Grass barely grows, and we do not have any flower beds to maintain. Just a very large patch of grass. About the size of half a tennis court.
Last year I used a well known brand of liquid weed killer and targeted large weeds in the garden. It did the job fine. However I found out I used the stuff very quickly.
This year however the weeds are back and this time they have bought a lot of friends, infact, they are not one off weeds, its almost like a flowerbed of weeds. All different sorts. The grass itself was very patchy, with it growing thick in some areas and short in others. Also the greens were all over the place, very patchy. To be honest, it looked awful. How difficult can it be to just grown grass?
A friend of mine uses a company and for £15 every 3 months (apparently) a company come out and maintain the grass. Basically they feed it. Not bad I thought, I could do abit of that. Called the company who came out. They analized the grass and worked out that I had 5 different types of weed and it would cost £15 per month with a visit every 3 months. I took a step back from that abit and worked out if it was worth it. In the end, decided it was down to me to sort it out.
I was in Tesco and noticed the Evergreen 4 in 1 complete. Cost £8. Had a look on the box. So what does it do?1 - It greens the grass
2 - Kills weeds
3 - Kills moss
4 - Improves water absorption
I thought I would give it a go. Whats the worse that could happen?
It says 7 days for the grass to get greener. Honestly, I think its taken nearly over a month for me to notice a different in the colour. But I would not say its blown my mind. My next door neighbour has greener grass than me.
The moss will go black and you just rake it out. Ill be honest, it did exactly that. Part of the garden when it was full of moss went black. A good old rake and that was coming out no ones business. Ok its left some patches, but then now the moss has gone, grass can grow. I am happy that its done its job there.
Kills weeds in 6 weeks apparently. Your see them twist and fade away. This is very hit and miss. The weeds that were growing in a one off pattern, have disappeared and not grown back after I cut the lawn 3 weeks ago. I think its done its job. However the "flower bed of weeds" still continue to fight the seeds and produce some very large thick weeds. How or why, I don't know. Maybe they are too strong for this weed killer? Either way, I do feel let down. I think the main purpose of this product was to sow the seeds into the ground that dig deep and really get to the weeds and kill them. Its not done it.
The area receives plenty of sun and rain aswell, so its not like its missing anything. I have thought of buying another box and trying it again, hope that the dosage was not enough but then I think that maybe a liquid weed killer maybe best.
You can spread Evergreen in many ways. Direct from the box, with your hand or with a mechanical spreader. But that's more money. Providing you get an even, well distributed pattern of the product, your be fine. Leave a couple of days and if there has been no rain then water the garden.
Maybe it might work better for you? Different soil under your grass maybe? Who knows. I have followed the instructions as set out, but have come away feeling abit disappointed as those pesky weeds really are annoying me.
=== The Manufacturer's Claim ===
EverGreen Complete 4 in 1 feeds lawns, kills weeds, controls moss and its unique Watersmart Formula helps your lawn resist heat, drought and other stresses.
=== My Experience ===
Our lawn had been neglected for most of the time we have lived in our present home. In fact the flattish green area that children have played on, and pets have dug up, was more like a large area of weeds that we tried to regularly mow.
After 25 years of neglect, with children and pets gone, we started to take up gardening as a hobby. First we built up a stock of hardy plants for our borders. Then we wondered what to do about the mown green mixture of weeds with a few blades of grass in it. We preferred a DIY solution, preferably without the strenuous work of re-turfing. This is what we did.
We bought Evergreen Complete 4 in 1 and followed the instructions. We first bought a tub with an easy pour spout. We then topped this up with large refill packs, which work out the cheapest way of buying large amounts.
It is important to spread the advised amount onto the area to be treated. We did this by walking up and down the area sprinkling the mixture with the spreader provided. Use the correct amount because under-treating will not be fully effective, and over-treating can scorch any grass that you do have.
We kept an eye on the weather forecast and tried to time the treatments so that it would be raining soon afterwards. If it doesn't rain heavily within 2 days, you will have to water thoroughly yourself for the product to work properly.
Until the treatment has been fully watered in, the area should not be used. The moss killer part of the treatment will cause rust coloured stains on pathways if it gets on the bottom of shoes and is transferred. This also applies to floor coverings if it gets inside the home.
The weeds slowly started to die away, not surprisingly leaving large bear patches of earth. What I wasn't expecting was the strong smell of decay as the vegetation that we wanted to get rid of rotted. With hindsight I suppose we should have realised that getting rid of a large amount of weeds this way would have this temporary pungent side effect. The dead material should be raked up. The full weed control effect was not seen until 5 weeks after application.
We needed several applications over the whole growing season (April-September) the first year that we treated the area that we wanted as our lawn. It is advised that you leave 6 weeks in between treatments.
With weeds eventually gone, we successfully treated the bare patches with Patch Magic, which I also hope to find time to review. It is advised that you leave it 6 weeks after using Evergreen 4 in 1 before re-seeding.
We now have a good grassy area that we can genuinely call a lawn, so I am very pleased with the results of using Evergreen 4 in 1.
We used this product 14 days ago on frontt and back garden.Have to say just sick we used it.A hude number of black patches appeared.Instructions were followed to the letter.It rained so did not have towater in.We raked out black burned areas.Area of grass are scortched.Instructions said any blackening of grass temperary.How long is that.No change has happened, the grass hasn't even begin to change.The blackened areas are still horribly black after raking out moss.We are very disappointed with this product.Discussed with a number of people and all sick they used it.What's happening?
This is a review for the above product, they do come in different sizes and I bought the one that looks like the above picture. It covers 100 square metres and cost me £9.99 from B and Q. As mentioned you can get different sizes including one for 360m2 and the prices do differ. I have found it readily available both on and off line but the prices tend to remain around the same wherever you look.
I bought this on a whim after seeing the advert as we have a lawn that although not very big needed a bit of help growing and "greening up" where a huge conifer was overshadowing it.
First of all so so so easy to use you pop the yellow spout out and scatter it over the ground walking slowly (it tells you all this on the back clearly) and thats it. I did end up watering it as it didn't rain. As far as how well it works...its amazing I could literally see the grass growing and every time it rained it looked like the grass grew another inch at least..therein lies the problem if you are not an avid grass cutter you will have problems it grows remarkably fast. When I say you can see the grass growing I am not exaggerating. This was the one and only downside for me as being England it tends to pee it down regularly and I try not to cut the grass when wet. This combined with my odd shifts meant that with it growing an inch everytime it rained and it raining a lot it got to be jungle status quite rapidly!
However I would and have recommended this product over and over again. My mum has now used it on her lawn and agrees with me.
Our lawn is no more than 50m2 and has had 2 applications this summer (she says ironically...what summer!) and there is plenty more left for next year.
A triple-action chemical that feeds lawns, kills weeds and controls moss.
