A good way to kill of tree stumps

When we moved into our home 4 years ago the garden was very overgrown with bushes and shrubs making the garden appear closed in and much smaller than it actually was. We decided straight away to remove these to open up the garden and let more light in, however this proved to be quite difficult as some of the shrubs had developed massive trunks and proved time consuming and difficult to remove.

In the end we decided to just cut them down as low as we could get them and then kill the stump off, neither of us liked the idea of using a root killer but in this case we decided it was the easiest option as we were keen to get the garden looking nice as soon as possible.

The root killer we decided on was one I knew would work as my parents had used it in the past. We bought Growing Success Deep Root Ultra which we bought from our local Homebase. I cant remember how much we paid for it but the current price is £9.99 for a pack of 4 sachets, the box we bought only had 2 in it.

Deep Root Ultra is sold in a mainly green box, the front of the box has Growing Success Deep Root Ultra Tree Stump and Weed Killer written across the front. The customer is also informed that this is systemic and will kill above and below the ground.

The front of the box also shows a small picture if children and animals giving the indication that this is safe to use around them however when you read the writing surrounding the picture its only safe once the product has dried.

The rest of the box gives all the other information you would need to know when using a product of this type.

Inside the box you get 2 x 100ml's sachets of clear liquid, each sachet is sealed inside a clear bag so if they do get damaged the weed and tree stump killer is still contained. The sachets give the directions for use for using the product as a tree stump killer and a general weed killer.

The sachets also give some safety instructions and whilst these should be read and adhered to they are really just common sense for this type of product.

T use the Deep Root Ultra to kill stumps you simply snip the corner from the sachet and pour the liquid evenly  over the stump within 1 week of cutting down. I have no idea whether the liquid has any smell as I have never fancied getting it close to my face to give it a sniff.

Once we had treated our stumps we covered them up with bags or placed boxes over them until all the liquid had dried completely as at the time we had 3 cats and also we didn't want other animals, pets or wild, touching them.

We were pleased with the results from the Deep Root Ultra, although we only treated stumps with no foliage so didn't actually see anything dying off as such the shrubs, bushes and also an overgrown Stags Horn Tree which was sending up shoots everywhere  died and eventually rotted down making them easy to remove.

I know this sort of product isn't ideal but if you do have trees, bushes or shrubs that are overgrown and taking over then I would recommend Deep Root ultra, its clean and easy to use, works fast and gives lasting results. Its not cheap but it did work the first time and we never needed to re-apply.
