Homebase Multi-Purpose Compost
Advantages: Nice crumbly soft texture
Disadvantages: None at all
I have always used Homebase own brand compost for my pots and baskets and have never been disappointed. Every year we have a lot of pots and containers on our patio and several hanging baskets at the front and back of the house and always take advantage of the 4 bags for 3 or 3 for £10.00 offers they are usually running.
The bags individually cost £4.99 for 60litrs, the bag is the usual plastic sack that these type of products come in. It has a large yellow flower on the front and the Homebase logo, the front of the bag tells the customer that this is multi purpose compost and is suitable for most plants. It cant be used for anything that need ericaceous compost and small seeds although I have grown many seeds in this and have had no problems. The bag is covered with tiny pin prick holes to keep the air flowing through it.
The back of the bag gives some information about the product and some more general gardening tips about watering and planting. The compost contains a peat replacement wood fibre produced from sustainable forestry sources certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council. The wood fibre will help the compost retain moisture and nutrients.
I have been really pleased with Homebsae multi purpose compost, last year the flowers in my pots and baskets did very well, of course some of this has to be the quality of the plant and the care we gave them but in my opinion the compost played a big part. The consistency of the compost is always good I have never had a bag that was any different. The compost is a nice dark brown/black colour and feels soft and crumbly, I have never had solid clumps in the bag like I know you do get with some composts
The multi purpose compost is suitable for most outdoor plants and house plants too, unless you are growing something that needs a special compost I would certainly recommend Homebase Multi Purpose. We have used it for both indoor and outdoor plants and vegetables and have always had excellent results. In my opinion its alright for seeds and planting on despite the bag advising not to. The compost will feed your plants for approximately 4 weeks and after that it is best to use a plant food of some sort.
Of course if you are a really serious gardener who goes by the book then this may not be for you but if like us you like to grow some vegetables and have lots of pots and baskets then this is ideal. Its excellent value for the money and nearly always on offer.
Summary: A good quality compost from Homebase
