Advantages: It comes with added nutrients...
Disadvantages: It has its limitations
THE USE OF COMPOST IN ONE'S GARDEN
The main reason that you need a compost in your garden ,in the first place is, to spruce up the soil that's not healthy or that it just needs a boost...the first and foremost thing that one has to take into account before starting a garden ,is how you treat the soil that your plants are growing in...The composting of waste materials provides a natural system of 'reuse', ultimately by returning nutrients to the soil....
The COMPOST that is normally produced from green waste has low levels of NITROGEN , however ,over a period of time, the compost continues to degrade further and produce nitrogen , that is essential for plants..... it is also argued that the POTASSIUM and PHOSPHOROUS contents are higher in Naturally made Compost than in MULTI PURPOSE COMPOST...going by that fact, if one has the convenience to make one's own compost by using Vegetable waste, Fruit peel and other degradable kitchen waste, there is nothing like it....
The most nutritional, enviornment safe compost is got by this natural method by layering the green waste with soil and dry leaves, with occasional watering to help it degrade...
MULTI PURPOSE COMPOST on the other hand is a mixture of Peat, which is decaying VEGETABLE MATTER ,SAND and LOAM, which is in turn a mixture of sand, silt and clay in a proportion of 40:40:20..Loam is the ideal garden soil....but most multi purpose compost are low on Nitrogen and other essential nutrients...
ABOUT LEVINGTON MULTI PURPOSE COMPOST
Taking into account the fact that most Multipurpose Compost are low on nutrients, Levington Multi Purpose Compost has added John Innes(nutrients) along with the compost...it is a combination of peat, sterilised loam and horticultural sand and the added nutrients.... and plants grown in these composts are healthy and vigorous..... .
It can be either used directly as potting soil or ideally mixed with
Green compost .
I have tried mixing the Levington's multipurpose compost with the home made organic compost and growing Banana Plant in a Large pot, and the result was very satisfactory..it is yet to yield any fruits...but, i have grown it mainly for ornamental purpose...
I have also used the mixture for Jasmine plants which are grown outdoors...Just dug out a portion of the soil around the plant and spread the Levington's multipurpose compost and covered it with the old soil that had been dug out .....with regular watering, the results were very good...The Jasmine shrub is blooming with flowers..
But whereas one can safely use the "Organic compost" for all kinds of plants, i am not too sure about the Levington's , as, it has added nutrients, which may not be suitable for certain kinds of plants.I was not too happy with the results on Begonias...i used the Multipurpose compost when i repotted a perfectly healthy variety of Begonia, which started developing yellowish spotted leaves after a few days of repotting, and ,when i changed the soil back to organic, i could see it growing healthier leaves and thriving.....
One can still safely use the multi purpose compost for almost all the plants, except for a few exotic varieties, grown in pots....
Personally, i still prefer the Home made Compost....it is the healthier and cheaper option for one thing and there is a lot of satisfaction and happiness in making your own compost at home and growing healthy plants....
But when one is unable to do so, i feel that Levingtons' is the best option as, it serves the purpose pretty well..it is good and the price is quite reasonable..costs approximately between £5 -£ 6 for a 75 liter pack...
