      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Costly spray

      I bought this spray for two reasons this year, reason one being to get rid of the aphids that are killing my rose bush and two to rid my bathroom plant of drain fly as they are breeding on the soil and then dropping dead all over the bathroom floor which is really gross.

      ==Price and availability==

      I bought the bottle for £7.99 for a 500ml version from my local garden centre. The price is far too much in my opinion especially considering the limited success I have had with it.

      ==Description==

      The bottle comes with a chunky base and a spray nozzle at the top. There is a large hands to grip and pull on and you can lock the nozzle by turning it around. There is a large burst of spray that comes out of the end and it has quite a large radius. I would prefer a more precise nozzle as I want to target specific stalks where the nasties are hiding.

      The bottle is large enough to last all year but because I have found it very unsuccessful there is little left of the product. I had an outbreak of drain fly that has appeared to come from the plant in the bathroom. The flies are awful terrible fliers so they just bump into you as you try and shower! I squirted the plant and around where they were hanging out and the spray just did not have an effect. If anything the flies just bumped into things and became more dizzy their usual life span of 48 hours was not really impacted upon. I was disappointed with the spray as it had little effect. The other time I used it, I sprayed it on my rose bush that had a particular aphid problem. The aphids got wet bur they did not die. It took about fifty squirts over 24 hours to get rid of half of them and the other half just stayed there.

      I am not sure if the new flies on the block are just immune to this type of spray or whether it is just rubbish.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Levington's 'Natures Answer to Insect Pests' is a natural insecticide to treat common garden aphid pests such as blackfly and greenfly. The spray contains an extract from the chrysanthemum family called 'pyrethrins'. Its odour isn't too unpleasant. It is suitable for use both indoors and outdoor flowers, fruit and vegetables. If used on edible crops they can be harvested the next day which is a bonus though it is best to avoid spraying crops in open flower. It does note that some aphids are pesticide resistant, especially glasshouse whitefly and spider mites. However, I've found this spray the most effective natural control of black fly I've tried - I've found blackfly has been rife this year and tends to congregate on the fresh new shoots of plants. I find it best to cut off shoots which are so covered you can see nothing but a mass of aphids and then spray the rest of the plant. On inspection the next day I find the aphids remaining have shriveled and died. I've found spraying every five days has been fine to control the aphids so far but as summer goes on I'd expect to have to spray more and therefore it can be quite costly if you have a lot of plants to treat. The spray appears to have had no adverse effect on the plant treated. I am unsure as whether being a 'natural' insecticide is the same as 'organic' and believe this is an area manufacturers should look into - clearer labeling, for a beginner it can be very confusing. Overall, I'd rate this product highly as it can be used on a variety of plants both indoors and out therefore limiting the need to fill the garden shed with numerous treatments. I think it is of particular use for those growing edible, especially salad crops, which are prone to pests but need to be harvested continually and regularly. A good all round product As with all pesticides, wash hands after use, try not to breath it on and don&
