This year I found a miraculous garden product which has saved us ££££'s.
I volunteer for a local mental health charity and make up some very large garden pots for the courtyard garden. Theres no extra funds so we cannot afford to keep replenishing the compost and plants each year.
As this courtyard garden is in shade I plant lots of Fuchsia and Buzy Lizzie which the dreaded vine weevil adore. The vine weevil (in its grub stage) is a fat, white, c shaped grub with a brown head and it eats away at the roots of its chosen plants; especially damaging to plants when they are in pots.
I normally have to spend hours sifting through the compost and roots to get rid of them before the next seasons planting. I tried the Provado chemical product with little success.
Then I found out about Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer. I used it in April and the plants were vibrant all through the Summer. I have just emptied the pots for Winter and have not found a single vine weevil grub.
***What is It?***
Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer is not a chemical and it is completely harmless to children, pets and birds. It consists of millions of microscopic nematodes, like minute worms, which migrate through the compost and eat the larvae of the vine weevil.
***How You Can Purchase It?***
I ordered mine from Amazon and it came from 'The Green Gardener'. A pack to treat 125 sq yards costs around £9 with free shipping. You can choose to receive half your order in Spring when you are planting your new season's plants and the next half in Autumn to kill off any grubs which may still be in the soil over the Autumn and Winter months.
***How You Store It.***
The package of nematodes is sent through the post and you are instructed to store it in the fridge until you are able to use it. However it does have a 'use by date' on it so make a note of this. Don't worry about the fridge - the nematodes are not live until they are mixed in water. All you can see is a powdery substance.
***How to Use It***
The nematode solution must be applied to moist soil so just before you you are ready to use it you are instructed to thoroughly water all the pots and garden beds you plan to treat. ( If the day is very hot it is best to carry out the task later in the day so the nematodes will have chance to burrow under and throughout the moist soil overnight.)
Then you divide the powdery substance in the pack and (for this size pack - do read the instructions on yours) mix half of it in 8 litres of water in a watering can. Keep stirring it as you use it.
Just pour a 'slurp' of the solution in each previously well watered pot. (Ithink I used far too much the first time I used it and it did not fill the advertised number of pots or bed area) For the garden bed area I pour a slurp over areas around plants I know the vine weevils like eg. Primulas, Polyanthus, Cyclamen Sedums, Fuchsias, strawberry plants, Runner Beans and all the bedding plants mentioned above.
Do the same as above with the remaining powdery substance in the pack into a further 8 litres of water and remember to keep stirring the solution.
Use ALL the solution, it won't keep, if any is left pour it over any garden bed.
Then its sit back and enjoying happy vine weevil free gardening!
