Advantages: Works quickly and effectively
Disadvantages: Better designed container needed
I moved into a new house back in November, and after just a few weeks started to notice the occasional ant rummaging around on the floor. I was not too worried about this, and just tended to squash the odd one that I saw, but as the weeks passed by it was obvious that the ants where beginning to multiply in numbers, and one day I was horrified to find about 50 of them crawling about on my kitchen floor near to the bin, and several of them had actually climbed up on to the kitchen counters near to the sink! I am not a big fan of killing any creature just for the sake of it, but obviously some action needed to be taken to stop this marching army of ants taking over my whole kitchen, before conquering the entire house!
Therefore I went out and purchased a bottle of Nippon Ant Killer immediately, from my local garden centre, which cost me around £3 for a 150 gram container.
The container is a white plastic bottle shape, with a useful safety cap at the top to prevent young children from opening it up. Inside the container there is a mass of fine white powder, similar looking to talc which is used to spread over any areas that the ants use to gain access to the house, as well as on their nests if there are any nearby.
This powder from Nippon is also suitable for killing cockroaches, beetles, earwigs, silver fish, woodlice and most other crawling insects according to the label on the container.
After removing the safety cap I sprinkled a fine dusting of the powder outside my front door, back door, and patio door, as these where the areas that I had seen the ants entering my house from. I also put a tiny amount down along the skirting boards in the hallway, as again I had seen them scurrying along those areas in the past.
The powder needs to be treated with care, as it is both toxic and poisonous to ants after all, and so it should not be used on or near to food preparation areas, and should not be directly inhaled. However it is stated as being both pet and child friendly, with the exception of babies, although personally I would endeavor to keep pets and children away from treated areas as far as reasonably possible just to be on the safe side.
~~~ Results ~~~
I was very impressed with the results from this ant killing powder from Nippon. It does exactly as expected in that it kills the ants, and after about a week I did not see another ant in my house again. It seems to be very effective, and at the same time it is not all that noticeable that it is even there to the naked eye. It is recommended to reapply the powder as necessary but for me just the one application did the trick.
The powder does seem to go a long way, and I still have about three quarters of my powder still left in the container which makes it a good value purchase. It is relatively easy to vacuum up any residual powder from around the skirting boards, along with any of the dead ants that might be mixed in with it.
I am unable to comment on its results in terms of killing cockroaches, beetles, earwigs, silver fish, woodlice and most other crawling insects, as I have not had any problems with any of these up to yet, but based on the way it treated my ant problems I would be happy to bet that it would also be very good.
A minor niggle would be that it could do with some sort of slow release shoot on the container, as it currently just falls from the large hole at the top of the bottle, meaning that getting a slow trickle of powder to drop from the container is quite difficult, and it often resulted in me dropping little piles of the powder, rather than a nice even dusting.
Overall recommended by me as it does the job it is supposed to, lasts a long time, and has multiple uses.
Thanks for reading.
