Nippon Ant Killer Powder
Advantages: Stops ant getting in
Disadvantages: Not so good on nests
An area in our front garden has attracted a couple of ant colonies (it could actually be one big one in fact but it is hard to tell) and this meant we had seen a few getting into the house. So I went out and bought some Nippon as I have memories of this as being very effective at both killing ants and also acting as a sort of barrier to stop ants getting into the house, I remember when we used to go camping my father using it around the tent to keep ants out and away from our food store.
It comes in a distinctive red and white plastic bottle and the 150ml size that I bough cost me £2.79 which was a little more than the own brand product but I remembered this as being an effective product so decided the extra would be worth it. It has a safety cap and the a single large perforated inner lid for you to dispense the white powder through. On the back are the handling instructions, this includes the obvious instructions that if you are using in the home to keep it away from food and preperation areas as well as washing your hands after use.
I have not used it in the house at all as I have a small daughter but we did use it around the area where the ants colony was and also along the front of the house to try and prevent entry. In terms of preventing the ants from entering the house it has certainly worked well and I have no complaints on that score. It does not seem to have had any material impact upon the actual ant colony though as they seem to be thriving, part of me wonders whether just like plants have built up resistence to pesticides so ants have built up resistence to Nippon. Then again maybe I'm expecting too much.
This powder can also be used to tackle a number of other creepy crawlies like wood lice or cockroaches but apart from the odd woodlice we do not really have much of an insect problem other than spiders and I have a gadget for removing them which is humane.
Overall I guess it gets the job done but I seem to remember it being more effective in the past.
Summary: Worth a try
