Raid Ant Killer Powder
Advantages: Gets rid of ants
Disadvantages: Its Toxic.
I know ants are hard workers but so am I and the last thing I want to see when I get in from work is an ant invasion in my kitchen!! But this is exactly what happened a few weeks ago. They had been coming in under the patio doors. I tried Clove Oil but this just deterred them from this area and they came in further along the kitchen wall. So despite hating ant powder I relented and sent Mark out to get some.
He went to our local corner shop and got some Raid Ant Killer Powder. It cost £3.00 from there but I'm sure you could get it cheaper from larger stores
Raid is made by SC Johnson and contains Deltramethrin.
The container is made mainly from white plastic. The front is coloured red and has the word Raid in yellow with a lightning bolt killing an ant ( an odd thing to show) It has the words Ant killer powder, kills bugs dead for use as an insecticide written underneath.
The lid is child proof and has to be pressed hard to open it.
On the back of the bottle there are the directions along with some warnings.
Keep away from children and pets
Raid is very toxic to aquatic environments
Do not breathe in the powder
Do not get the powder in drains
Do not get on your skin.
The ant powder is just a white powder that looks a bit like talc. It doesn't have any obvious smell and as its toxic I'm not smelling it close up!
Killing The Ants
To use the powder you simply squeeze the bottle and the powder puffs out trough a single hole in the top.
I put the powder along the bottom of the patio doors outside. If its an ant nest you are dealing with then it does advise that you split the nest open and apply the directly inside.
Once I had put the ant powder down (keeping the cats well out of the way) that's all there is to it. The Raid powder is supposed to prevent any ants getting in and when they get the powder on them the idea is that they take it back to the nest and this then kills them all.
I'm pleased to say after just one treatment my ant problem went away and they havnt returned. The Raid Ant Powder done the job very well. I left it for a few days then washed the rest of the powder away.
It can also be used to kill cockroaches, woodlice and other crawling insects.
Summary: I would have prefered to use something less toxic but Im pleased the ants have gone!
