Advantages: cheap, effective

Disadvantages: not environmentally friendly

I finally did it. I bought an aerosol wasp killer and went stalking wasps. Why did I take this extreme action? Read on and all will revealed.

I was walking along the street, minding my own business as one does and I felt a sudden sharp pain in the side of my knee. I looked down and saw nothing but my jeans. I ignored the pain until it became more intense and started to throb.

I rolled up the leg of my jeans and a large wasp flew out. It had stung me on the knee and just flown off into the sunshine to look for another victim.

By the time I got home I was in considerable pain, so, I started a one woman campaign against any wasp that dared to enter my home. Now, I can't remember exactly what the wasp that assaulted me looked like, so I am stalking them all until they get into the right position, then zap, I've got them.

I don't normally buy, or use insecticides but I'm not going to risk being stung again. The recent hot weather makes wasps almost drunk and sleepy and they come inside to get cool. When it isn't better inside they find someone to sting inretribution. Well, that's my theory anyway.

Back to the product. Sanmex Wasp (and fly) killer comes in a red, yellow and blue aerosol can. It works very quickly and is effective against many other flying insects too.

You simply shake the can and spray into the centre of the room, leave the doors and windows closed for about 15 minutes and the room is clear of insects (well, clear of live ones anyway.)

I use it to 'shoot' wasps before they get near me.

This stuff contains a whole 'chemical' soup and should be kept away from food, fish, fish bowls, skin and household pets. It isn't adviseable to breathe it in and hands should be washed thoroughly after use.

The list of chemicals means little to me, but for those of you who do know something about them here are the main ingredients:

Tetrame
thrin 0.15%
Permothrin 0.03%
Piperonyl Butoxide 0.75%

This product contains solvents and butane propellant so it is far from environmentally friendly. I would not normally buy a product which causes so much pollution but my quest against drunken wasps means that I don't have a lot of choice. Most insecticides of this type contain similar ingredients.

This product is also extremely flammable and will mark polished surfaces.

Sanmex is, however, cheap. My can cost 65p at Morrisons for a 300ml can. This will last this summer and probably most of next.

If you need a fast acting, inexpensive, household insecticide, this is ecellent value. (The wasps won't think so, though!)

Do wasps serve any purpose at all? I think they're evil, too.
