Advantages: Cheap, comfortable

Disadvantages: Poorly fitting screw fixings

I bought a softwood bench from B&Q a few months ago for just £25. The price is fantastic and the bench itself is very nice. It comes flat packed unvarnished and ready for assembly. My husband first treated all the wood to some preservative and then stained it with some wood varnish, this needs to be done before assembly otherwise you will have bare wood under the bits that join.

Several days later (two coats of preservative and one of varnish had to dry) he put it all together. The instructions were clear and easy to follow but some of the parts were very badly fitted. He had to replace two of the joining thingy's because they didn't seem to fit and got cross threaded. My husband just got cross.

Eventually he had the bench properly fitted together and we have enjoyed sitting on it. The slats are springy but firm and the bench is very comfortable. You do need to put it away for the winter though as soft wood shouldn't be left out in all the elements. Fortunately it just about fitted in the shed following a major reorganisation.
