A great picnic rug to keep you dry

I recently took some bags of garden rubbish to the tip and went to put a blanket down in the back of my car. I realised that my husband had my usual rug in his car so I used this Draper rug which I usually keep in the utility room so it is easily accessible to use in the garden. I know I bought it from a small local garden centre but cannot remember exactly how much I paid but I think it was around £6 approximately two years ago. You can currently pay up to £11 for them which isn't cheap for a picnic rug but I think you are paying for the name as Draper is a very well known and trusted brand who have been around for many years.

The rug measures 130cm x 117cm which I would say is average for a picnic rug. It is a red, blue and white check design and the colours are dark enough not to show marks quickly. It rolls up into a neat carry bag with a handle and is fastened by a hook and loop fastening. It is dual layer with the top layer being a sort of furry fleece material and the bottom layer is a plastic waterproof backing material which protects you against damp grass or other wet surfaces. This layer makes it easy to shake any grass off without too much effort. The layers are stitched together tightly and seem very secure.

It is very easy to carry around as you hold it as you would a small bag, but I only usually use it in the garden and when I have taken it out if we have used it for a picnic I have only taken it out of the car and then unrolled it straight away. To open the rug I just unhook it and shake it out which you can do easily. When I have finished I will just give it a shake and fold it back up into its original shape. It folds up quite compact so doesn't take up to much room if you are keeping it in the boot of your car.

The upper layer of the rug is quite comfortable to sit on although it isn't too thick, but at the end of the day it is preferable to sitting directly on grass. I find that this rug is big enough for me and my husband to sit on for a picnic and also for me to lie down if I am sunbathing in the garden. I have also used it to wrap around me when I have been sitting outside as I love to read in the garden even when it isn't particularly warm and this rug does keep me nice and cosy.

This rug has had a lot of use and is still in a good condition. It has a few minor pulls on the top layer but has not ripped or torn but I would think that if you placed it on a rough or stony surface this could damage it. It doesn't appear anything really special and just looks like an average picnic rug but it has a variety of uses and is good quality, and I would recommend it as a useful addition for your garden, especially if you can get it a bit cheaper.

A basic rug that will keep your bum dry in summer.

I have just packed away my Draper picnic rug as the weather is slowly becoming cooler now and wetter. As a family we have had plenty of use out of it this wonderful hot summer, and we will certainly use it again as there is still plenty of use left in it yet, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to a prospective picnic rug buyer.

I bought the Draper picnic rug from my local hardware store for £6.99, which seemed like a reasonable price for such a product as there were similar rugs in the same shop that cost several pounds more. We were on our way to the park and it suddenly occurred to me that we had a picnic basket but no rug, and I liked the tartan design of the Draper one so I bought this one on the spot.

The rug is nice and comfortable, it is soft like any rug should be but I would probably call it a mat rather than a rug because it is not particularly thick. It feels a bit cheap when you sit on it but it looks nice and it's not uncomfortable, and certainly more comfortable than just sitting on grass.

The rug seemed a lot bigger when I bought it and carried it to the park, but sitting on it there is only room for me and a little space for my toddler although she wasn't interested on sitting on it anyway, she is always too busy running around. The rug measures 70cm x 100cm which as I say isn't huge but it does mean that it is quite lightweight and it is certainly big enough to avoid getting grass on your bum, or grass on a couple of bums if you sit with it horizontally instead of vertically.

The Draper picnic rug has a layer of PVC on the underside so that if the grass is wet it won't soak through to the soft side. This was not much of a problem this summer anyway but I did test the rug on slightly damp grass and it held its own.

The rug design is quite useful for masking inevitable food and drink spills as it is a dark tartan pattern. The top surface also dries fairly quickly and is easily wiped clean with a baby wipe as a temporary measure. The PVC side is easy to sponge down in the bath and it also dried easily on the line in the heat with no problems.

I have noticed one problem with the rug which is that it is a big slippery because of the texture of the top material, so it is quite easy for things to roll off it or for you to slip on it if sitting at an angle, eg on a hill. This did happen to me once this summer and it was definitely to do with the texture of the rug and nothing else, which is a bit annoying as I'd expect a rug like this to have better grip for sitting on.

It is a nice looking rug and it serves its basic function, but it is also very basic design that could be improved, so I recommend shopping around rather than buying this rug, unless it sounds like it suits all your needs based on this review.

        I give it 3 stars.

          5 stars

We bough two of these last summer for when picnics arise! They are so practical I wish I'd have had these when my children were little.

What is great about these rugs is that they roll up and secure using a bit of Velcro so you can easily store and carry them! We only use these a few times a year because of the weather so it's great that they can be kept in such a practical manner and then when we do use them it's easy for us to tidy them away after use or to carry to the location.

The rugs are a good size and on the back of them is a special waterproof coating. The top is a fleece-like material. The ones we have are dark purple and look nice. I would prefer a more summer-like colour so am keeping my eyes open for some more! We find that we can just about squeeze four of us on one with the nibbles in the middle but we have two to make it more practical to have bigger space.

My only criticism is that the rug is hard to brush off, we have crumbs spilt on it regularly and they tend to stick to the material and it's difficult to get rid of them even when we bash it around!

My grandchildren love it because it seems more exciting when we get the rug out, we even get it out and sit with it in the lounge sometimes when the weather isn't good!

It cost me £8 when I bought it so £16 for two which I think are really practical so I'm happy I just wish I knew about these sooner!

          A useful portable picnic rug

          ~A handy little picnic rug~
          ********************

I bought one of these little roll up picnic rugs made by Draper for use when attending a festival a while ago and have had my trusty picnic rug rolled up and ready for use to take out and about on sunny days since then. I liked the idea of having the rug as it seemed like a great little item that would mean I wouldn't have to sit on muddy or wet grass whilst listening to the bands who were performing at the festival. I must say that I found the picnic rug to be really light and easy to carry about when it was rolled away ready for use, as I simply stashed it away in the picnic carry bag that I had with me at the time.

When using the picnic rug I have found that it is really easy to set up as I simply open the velcro fastener that keeps the rug safely rolled up when not in use and then allow the rug to roll out. The material used to make up the top part of the rug ( the bit you sit on) is made of lightly textured material that I found was a little rough when the rug was newly bought. Over time the slightly stiff/ rough texture of the material disappeared and the top part of the rug became much softer and nicer to sit on.

I have found that the checked material that makes up the top part of the picnic rug still looks neat and tidy even though the rug has been used a good number of times. There have been a few pulls to the material where it has accidently caught on something when in use, but other than that the material still looks presentable in my opinion. I don't think that the material used to make the rug looks very fashionable due to the choice of colours used but it does the job just the same.

The back of the rug has a really thin plastic liner that is stitched to the checked part by way of the border material that runs around the two parts that make up the rug. The stitching here has proven to be durable and both the liner and material parts of the rug have remained firmly stitched together which I have been pleased about. The slight downside to the backing liner is that it does feel really very thin and could be easily ripped or torn in my opinion if it was placed anywhere stoney/ pebbly.

So far the back of the liner on the rug I have hasn't worn too badly at all and it still looks in reasonable shape in my opinion, even though it has been used a good number of times. The rug can be washed if wanted and it is quick and simple to hang it out on a washing line in order to allow the material part of the rug to dry off before rolling everything back up and packing it away. The rug rolls away very easily and I found it simple enough to roll back into shape after I first used the rug. The built in carry handle is rather useful although I tend to pack the rug into a bag rather than carry it on its own.

I wouldn't say that this is the biggest picnic rug in the world, but at around 1300cms x 1170cms it does rolls out to a fair size that will allow at least 2 adults to sit comfortably on it. Larger picnics will require more than one of these rugs which can be placed next to each other to provide a larger seating area. I haven't placed deck chairs or fold up chairs of any sort on top of the rug as I feel it has a very thin liner which would get torn too easily. The rug is comfortable to sit on in my experience and the built in plastic/ pvc liner ensures that the rug stays dry even when placed on lightly damp grass or sand.

          ~Product rating/ price~
          ******************

I paid £6 for my picnic rug which I feel is fair value given the amount of use it has had. I wouldn't say that the rug is anything special in terms of looks, but it does function well enough as a highly portable no frills roll out picnic rug. I have found that the rug is fairly durable although it is quite thin. I have used it with care and haven't placed it on sharp or stoney surfaces which might pierce the pvc liner. My rating for this product is 4 stars as I feel it does what it has been made for, is light and easy to carry and provides a useful seating/ picnic area with the minimum of fuss. The slight downside to the product is that it feels quite thin and lacks any form of padding.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

A comfortable and neat looking rug for use during picnics.

I would think that a decent picnic rug is a neccesity for every home as I use it time and time a again during picnics during the warmer months.

I bought this picnic rack for £7 which might seem like quite a bit of money however I would rather spend a few pounds extra for the peace of mind rather than spend less money and struggle with a normal rug.

This rug has two layers so you do get a good amount of comfort when sitting on a harder surface as it is slightly thicker than my previous rugs. It also has a PVC back to make it water proof from under so it is suitable for use on a slightly moist or damp floor, so even when it has rained this rug can still be used with out any problems.

The rug is easy to clean after use as just a quick brush and it is ready to put away, it is also easy to wash and dry so no problems there.

The rug folds away nicely after use and the little handle just make life that much easier when using the rug (a very good idea indeed).

The pattern on this rug is some what old fashioned but it does give a sense of extra comfort and warmth.

Overall, I can not find a reason to complain about this product. Great value for money. I would truly recommend.

It's a useful piece of kit

              Draper 42987 1300 x 1170mm PVC Backed Picnic Rug - currently available on-line from around £6

Do shop around prices vary widely. We paid £15 in a petrol station, but we hadn't planned ahead.

This picnic rug is plastic backed, which means after it is laid out it shouldn't let any moisture through. It rolls up, and is held together with 'hook and loop' fastening (is it really bad that I just want to call it velcro?). It has on it a woven canvas style handle, and does roll up after use. However it won't look as neat as the picture.

We picked ours up at a petrol station, as we were off out for the day, and figured we should get a picnic of sorts sorted out.

The rug is a relatively good size for two people to eat on, but for any more, you would either need to sit very close, or have another rug. For us it was perfect, and it really did do the job well. We were sprawled out on it for a while an damp ground and didn't get at all soggy, and the plastic backing meant that the grass etc. did not come home with us on the rug back.

I would definitely recommend this product but definitely shop around as we did pay more than we should have for it.

              Recommended for couples.

It's been lovely here the past few days with summer finally arriving and so the kids and I have been making the most of it by being in the garden - and so the picnic rugs have been out, and among them the Draper 42987 Picnic Rug. I have owned the Draper 42987 Picnic Rug for about two years and it's been out on loads of occasions over that time. When I initially bought the rug it cost me about £15.00, but it is now on sale on Amazon for just £9.26, which is obviously a pretty good deal.

The Draper 42987 Picnic Rug is a large picnic rug that is plenty big enough for a couple to sit on for a picnic. The dimensions are 117 cm x 133 cm and so it is a rectangular shape that affords to a group sitting together. However, the really nice thing about the blanket is that it is really light weight (120g) and also rolls up really small - and so it's not a pain to have to carry around at all. When the rug is rolled up, there is a handle which makes carrying the rug even easier - although I do think it would be nice if it came with a little carrying case (which it doesn't).

The rug itself is a checkered design made up of red, white and blue. There is nothing particularly that stands out about the design of this rug - but having said that, it looks perfectly nice and acceptable and is very traditional, which appeals to me. The rug has a nice feel to it because it is quite soft and fleecy, and because it's quite thin it doesn't have a tendency to get us really hot when we're sat on it. A nice thing is that there is a waterproof sheet on the back of the rug and so the rug is kept dry, even if the grass is a little bit damp.

Overall, I think this is a good picnic rug and it's something that I would recommend for couples. It would be nice to have a larger option for a rug so that it would be big enough for a family of four.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

A great purchase for couples and families

I love picnics and find the idea quite romantic. I like curling up on a nice blanket eating delectable treats and drinking wine with my boyfriend. so long as the weather permits! Recently however, I've been roped into days out with my friends and their children; this isn't quite so relaxing! No matter what the occasion though; I always bring my draper picnic rug.

The company behind the blanket is Draper Tools which is a family-run company that has been selling high-quality products for more than 90 years. All their products are backed by the Draper tools guarantee.

The picnic rug comes in a traditional tartan pattern and measures 130 x 117cm. It would be nice to see more funky designs on the market though. This is a perfect size and comfortably sits four people and plenty of snacks. The rug comes with a pvc backing which is great for when the ground is a little damp because it makes the rug waterproof.

It folds down into a compact 35 x 15 cm and fastens with Velcro. There is a little handle so it is easy to carry around from place to place. To open the rug, simply unhook the Velcro fastener and it folds out to full size. It is just as easy to pack up and all you have to do is roll it up.

After a trip with the children and there are cheese watsits ground into it and various drink spills, I take it home and put it in the washing machine and it comes out as good as new.

Another little tip is that a bottle of red wine folds neatly inside the rug. This acts as a cushion when transporting to prevent the bottle being broken. As we carry our food in a cool bag we do not our bottle of red chilled and this offers the perfect carrying case!

I'm very pleased with my product and bought it for £6.00 from my local supermarket. You can buy it online for a similar price. I would fully recommend it.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Worthwhile for those who enjoy picnics.

When getting the picnic equipment ready for a day out we always take the Draper picnic rug with us. In the past, we used to use just a simple rug, but the Draper picnic rug is ideal for outdoor use, and is designed especially for our needs. The rug is backed in PVC to prevent the moisture soaking into the rug from the ground and the way the rug fastens up with the handle is a great idea.

I have only seen this particular rug in this colour, but there isn't anything else out there that we have come across that does such an effective job. The rug is two-ply and offers a generous amount of comfort when using it on the grass or beach. Although it is a branded product (Draper) it is relatively cheap at under £10 and i would think if you shopped around you might find it for around the £5 mark, so well within most budgets.

The rug is 130cm by 117cm which is big enough for two people and would be able to 'sit' a few more if necessary. The rug simply rolls up, fastens in place and the handle is there ready for easy carriage. A must for picnics due to our unpredictable British weather.

              An ideal small picnic blanket

I dipped my toes into the picnic blanket market for the first time during June as my husband's birthday was coming up and he wanted us to go for a picnic in Regents Park. Great idea, but we were sadly lacking in the picnic blanket department and I am allergic to grass, and thus necessitated the purchase of a blanket. I scanned Amazon for ages weighing up the pros and cons of various brands and finally bought two as I couldn't make up my mind. One of these was the Draper 42987 Picnic Rug.

This is a very convenient little picnic blanket as it is feather-light (177g) and rolls up into a small neat sausage which fits into any backpack. When rolled up it forms a cylindrical shape 34cm long with a diameter of 11cm. It consists of a practical material side which is comfortable to sit on (nothing scratchy about it!) and a water-proof backing. The water-proof backing protects the material side of the blanket from moisture as well as dirt. The colours are a very attractive with a tartan-effect: navy blue, royal blue, red and white. These colours are also practical as they do not show dirt easily.
When rolled up the picnic blanket has a little flap which folds down and is secured to the blanket with a piece of Velcro. On top you will find a convenient handle for carrying the picnic blanket.

The only down-side to this little beauty is its size: 117cm x 133cm. This is fine for two people to sit on and have a quick picnic, but if you are planning on spending the whole day outdoors and may want to have a little snooze in between then you will find it a bit small.

I would still highly recommend this picnic blanket for its convenient pack-in-the-bag size and light weight. I paid about £11 for my Draper 42987 Picnic Rug (I have just noticed that it is currently on half price at Amazon).
