After weighing up the pros and cons of various picnic blankets earlier this summer I finally bought two as I simply couldn't choose between my two favourites. By far the better of the two (for practical reasons) is the Gelert Festival Picnic Rug. This fantastic rug has a thin fleece material on the one side which is very comfortable to sit or lie on, and a water-proof backing on the other side. The water-proof backing protects the fleece side of the blanket from moisture as well as dirt. Unfortunately the picnic blanket is only available in one colour, blue, but as I like blue this is not a problem. This is a very convenient picnic blanket as it is reasonably light (about 660g - my kitchen scales are not 100% accurate!) and rolls up into a neat sausage. When rolled up it forms a cylindrical shape 48cm long with a diameter of 13cm. My favourite feature of the picnic blanket is that it comes with a type of 'harness' with a carrying handle, shoulder strap and two loops which fit around the ends of the cylindrical roll when the blanket is rolled up. Being able to drape the strap over your shoulder is a great way to carry the blanket while leaving your hands free for other important items such as the picnic food. The shoulder strap is removable if you prefer not to use it. The picnic blanket is a nice size when laid out on the ground: 160cm x133cm. It is also very easy to roll up again. I love my Gelert Festival Picnic Rug and can recommend it as a very comfortable addition to our frequent picnics. The Gelert Festival Picnic Rug costs about £15.
