“ Type: Patio Sets „
Around 18 months ago I decided to move from my large terraced house on a busy main road with no outdoor space, into a nice semi with a garden for the kids. The compromise I had to make on acquiring this outdoor space was loosing my large kitchen, and having no room for my huge farmhouse style dining table. I did have a small alcove area in the living room, just by the patio doors where I planned on putting a much smaller table and chair set, however by Easter I still hadn't got round to it and we were eating from trays on our knees.
It was while shopping in my local Morrisons and browsing the new gardening section that I spotted this table and chair set. I immediatly snapped it up, thinking at £40 it would do for in the living room corner until I got a proper indoor set, at which point I could put it out on my patio and enjoy my new garden.
The three piece York Bistro sets comprises of a clear topped table and two aluminium and wicker effect chairs. In my opinion, it was attractive enough to be used temporary indoors, and looked far sturdier and substantial than the iron and mosaic bistro sets I had seen in other stores, which also cost a lot more money!
The chairs came already assembled. They are made with silver hollow aluminium coated in a plastic substance, which makes it both sturdy and robust, but very light and easy to carry and move. The wicker effect is actually very strong plastic, although it does look very authentic. The wicker effect covers the seating area, and the back of the chair, and is really very durable. After a year of being climbed upon, bounced upon, stood upon (from both my kids and myself) neither show any signs of wear and tear at all. Being metal and plastic, cleaning only involves a damp cloth, however my one little complaint regarding the seats would be that stuff does tend to get stuck in the weaving. So while they are easy to wipe over, scraping out bits of food dropped in by my four year old can be a bit of a pain. The chairs are surprisingly very comfortable too.
The table came flat packed in a box. I have to say that up until 3 years ago when I separated with my ex-husband, I had barely ever even changed a light bulb. Even now I will call on my dad for anything remotely DIY. On this occasion though I was keen to get the table up and see how it looked, so had a go myself. I need not have worried as it was incredible straight forward and simple, and clear concise instructions are provided, along with an alan key, the only tool you will need.
The pieces to make up the table consist of the table top, 4 legs and 2 circular rings which fit between the legs to offer it stability. To assemble you simply turn the table top upside down and lie it flat. The 4 legs then slot into little tubes on the underside of the table and are secured with a screw. The most taxing part of assembly is fitting the circular pieces, and all that involves is holding them in place and fixing in with 4 screws. As the alan key is kindly provided with this set, I cracked on and my table was assembled in 15 minutes.
Once assembled I was again very impressed with the quality and sturdiness of this piece of furniture. The table is made with the same plastic coated hollow aluminium legs, and is incredibly stable. One concern I had was that it would be wobbly and flimsy, but it definitely isn't. The table top is made with a very thick good quality plastic, which looks like glass. This is fantastic as it looks so authentic, yet holds none of the dangers of a glass top and children! The edge on the table top is trimmed with the same wicker effect found on the chairs, which finishes it off nicely and gives it a stylish look. As with the chairs, a wet cloth is sufficient to clean the table, and after a year the top is still clear, unmarked, and as new.
I have actually still not bought a proper table for in my living room. While I do still intend to do so, I am really pleased with this little set, it's been a great buy for both indoors and outdoors...a truly versatile piece of furniture. As I have it right by the patio doors, I regularly lift it out onto the patio, and it's light enough to do so easily. The instructions say that the set is weatherproof, but recommend storing it in a garage or shed over winter. As I use this both in and outdoors, it hasn't been left outside for long periods so hasn't suffered any rain or sun damage. it has been left out for a couple of days and rained upon, and looks none the worse for this, so I would expect it to hold it's own outdoors through the summer months very well.
My family have used this set every day for a whole year, and it still looks as good as new. I really am impressed with the quality of this bistro set for the price. I also think it's one of the nicer looking sets I have seen for conservatory/gardens. I like the iron bistro sets, but apart from being twice the price of this one, they are usually very small, very unstable and rust easily. I've had a few compliments on my versatile and cheap little table and chairs set from people seeing it both indoors and out.
At 55cm diameter, the table is small enough to fit nicely into a corner when not in use, but large enough for two people to comfortably eat at, without feeling squashed. My one and only complaint about this table as a piece of garden furniture would be that you can not attach a parasol. When I eventually get round to buying an indoor table, I think it would bother me that I can't add this and would have to purchase a free standing parasol. However this hasn't bothered me in the last year, certainly as I use it inside, so is only a minor fault.
This set is available again this year in Morrison's stores, at the same price of £40. There are two different shades of wicker effect, mine is lighter the the one shown above in the picture...more a bamboo colour, while the other one available is a darker, greyer colour, like willow maybe? I would happily recommend this little set to anyone who was considering buying it, as I have been very happy with it so far, expect it to last a good few more years and am very impressed with the quality. It is ideal for porches, conservatories, small patios or even small livings rooms!
Enjoy the outdoors relaxing on the patio.
