“ Type: Garden Lights „
My local petrol station very often stocks garden products, which you can buy for a reduced price providing you fill your tank with a certain amount of fuel. These spotlights cost me £1.99 each with a fill-up of £15 a few months ago, and as I could choose as many of the lights as I wanted with just one purchase of petrol I ended up buying six.
The lights are made from polyresin and actually look extremely rock-like. They have been printed and painted so that no two look exactly the same, and although this does give a variation in colour this is what you would find in rocks from the natural world. When newly opened I thought they were a little shiny and looked very 'plastic', but within a few days the finish had weathered to leave me with some very attractive rock lights indeed.
The lens of the light itself is securely attached to the rock, there are a series of small screws running around the rim so I would imagine any repair work could be undertaken easily enough. The light provided is fairly bright and I was surprised to find there is just one single LED bulb inside to provide this light. They do not throw out enough light to help you see where you are going, although if placed at the edges of a pathway it would be sufficient to guide the way.
Personally I use them as shown in the photograph above, to draw attention to a beautiful potted plum tree I have in my garden. The lighting is ideal for this purpose as the light beams are certainly not bright enough to be intrusive, although I perhaps would avoid putting them too close to the windows as the shape of the rock light means the light does shine upwards.
There is an manual switch on the base of each light, this allows you to turn the lights off if you don't want the brightness on any particular night. This would be useful for some people I imagine, although personally I would much rather leave them to their natural on/off cycle where the lights automatically come on at dusk and switch off at dawn. This allows the solar panel to charge the battery throughout the day to give you as much light as possible in the night hours.
Incidentally, I'm extremely impressed with the solar panels on these rock lights. They cover a larger area than on many solar lights and therefore soak up much more sunlight, despite the fact that we have had very little in the way of sunshine recently the lights are still holding their own during the night so they are obviously managing to attract more sun than I originally thought. During the early morning hours I have noticed one of the lights is beginning to flicker slightly, but I do suspect this is more to do with the weak Winter sunlight than any fault with the light itself.
I absolutely recommend these Rock Spot Lights; they have lasted better and give a much more even light than other solar lighting I have used over the years in my garden. The outer casing has thus far lasted very well, indeed the longer I own them the more naturally rock-like they are beginning to look - they are completely weatherproof so don't worry about having to move them should it rain or snow, and this is not such a silly statement as it sounds as I have a colour-change solar light in my garden which is (bizarrely) not waterproof so can only really be used through the summer.
