Advantages: gives all round warmth

Disadvantages: can be dangerous when flames leap out

I was so excited to try out my new chimnea this year. We were having friends round for a barbeque so I thought great we'll put it on for the guests!

We had a fabulous barbecue and the weather held - hooray! It started getting a little chilly so we decided to light the chimnea. I had bought one of those fire logs which you just light and it starts burning!

I thought the chimnea would be great for all of us to sit around so that we could all keep warmm rather than just those who are sat directly in front of the chimnea. Some friends have got the other sort and unless you are sat directly in front of them it's not warm.

So with that in mind we placed it in the centre of us all and lit it! ha! well what a fire, in fact the flames were licking outside of the grated bits! it was quite a sight. Our guests had a little two year old which was a bit worrysome so in the end we put up some chicken wire which we had and put it all round about 2 foot away to prevent her from going anywhere near it!

It had the desired effect of being extremely warm and toasty but a little scary!! as it died down it wasn't so bad although was extremely hot!

I wanted to be honest on this review - so as those with little children don't purchase this item! I think with a bit of trial and error we may get the desired effect without the flames. If I work this out I will update this review!

Despite my reservations I am still quite pleased I just won't be recommending fire logs with this particular chimnea!

The other point to make is that it was quite tricky to put together and mine was damaged in the box, once I got the parts that were damaged replaced and put it together it's quite smart looking. It has a little handle for the door so that it can be taken off to poke it.

Summary: Take care when buying you have no children around!

I tried it again last night as we had few friends round. I have two children myself almost 7 and almost 10 so they know to be careful anyway.

I tried it with just sticks and newspaper, it wasn't so fierce but I certainly wouldn't leave it without watching my kids carefully. The flames still came out of the sides a little bit it would only take someone to walk past with flowing clothes and they'd be up!

We were all sat round it and it did keep us all warm whilst the children were playing in the garden. I'm still in two minds!!
