Advantages: A very practical watering can.
Disadvantages: None at all.
At the moment we are lucky enough to be enjoying the benefits of a heatwave but we have to spare a thought for our gardens, the water butts are running low and we have no choice but to give our gardens a good water or we run the risk of losing plants that we have been nurturing and some of them cost a pretty penny or two at the local garden centre too.
But before anyone drops me a message I do realise that the heatwave just doesn't suit everyone and many of the animals find it hard to cope with too.
Our watering can is working overtime at the moment, I water early in the morning and then again late at night when it has cooled down, my tubs are really colourful and I want to keep them looking like it for as long as possible.
A watering can is a watering can - to some extent that statement is true, you can buy a very inexpensive watering can for no more than a couple of quid but how long it will last is another matter.
I have had my Haws Practican for a few years now, a robust green plastic watering can that meets my everyday gardening needs.
Haws produce good quality watering cans and accessories so you expect to pay a little extra.
The six litre Practican is made from strong, durable and frost-proof green plastic, although the can holds 6 litres I never fill it to the top, I would far rather just fill it half way and make lighter work for myself.
The Haws Practican comes with a five year guarantee, I am more than sure that mine has long since run out but the can is still as good as the day that I bought it.
The Practican is designed for outdoor use, the straight handle allows for short reach and the opening in the top for re-filling is an ample size.
The Practican has been well designed, the handle and the spout balance well when the can is carrying water and Haws have added two inbuilt hangers, one placed towards the front of the can and one sits inside of the handle.
This means that you can hang the can at any angle or you can pop the spout and rose onto the hangers for easy storage.
The Practican came along with an oval brass face rose and a down spout, these two accessories may be all that you ever need but if you want to add to your watering can then go directly to the Haws website where you will see many spouts for tackling all different kinds of tasks.
Last year I added a Round All Brass Rose with an extra fine spray to water my tubs and pots, I prefer to use that fine spray in the green house too, if I have seedlings in trays then there is no chance that they are going to get battered about with the power of the water spray.
I always use my watering can to mix my plant foods in too, it allows me to gauge the correct amount of water to food.
If you do choose to use your can for plant food then be sure that you give it a good wash out before you move onto the next task.
My watering can has many different uses, it not only holds plant food but it holds water to wash away cleaning fluids ( the spout has a far better aim than a bucket) and it is a brilliant way of rinsing off the dirty odd paving slab.
If you have got blocked guttering and intend to clean it yourself then a watering can is the ideal thing to use, clear the blockage and then pour the water along the guttering to clear it, you can aim the end of the spout into the guttering perfectly.
Haws have a magnificent range of watering cans that range from basic ones like the Practican , long reach cans, galvanised cans, pretty watering cans in a range of beautiful colours, slim cans, steel cans and those handy little indoor watering cans. You can pay as little as £8 for a very basic can and then as much as £55 for a stylish long reach watering can.
Haws have a good comprehensive website but their goods are stocked at many garden centres and hardware stores throughout the UK.
Summary: Hard wearing and very useful.

- 02/07/09 I bought a bright blue plastic watering can in May but haven't used it since - with all these storms my plants are drowned. |

- 02/07/09 My Nan's dog used to like our watering can. If it was hot, he'd nudge it until someone filled it up and poured it over his head, bless him. It was really all we used it for, to be honest, because the hose was much more effective for the garden (even though there was a hosepipe ban....) |
