A good price and nice sized watering can

Since moving into our house a couple of years ago me and my husband have enjoyed doing our garden each year, most of the things we needed to get started with we brought brand new, however when we looked in the shed there were several pieces of gardening equipment that the lady before us had left behind all in good condition, one of these was a watering can, I was particularly pleased as it was a pink watering can. Anyway this watering can has lasted us 2 years of constant use, that was until my husband hung it from the tap to fill it up, unsurprisingly it fell off the tap cracking the bottom of it, this meant a trip to our local Homebase to purchase a new one. Personally I wanted one of the traditional style metal cans, obviously in pink, however Mark had other ideas and wanted a plastic one in green. After spending what seemed like ages looking at watering cans we decided the metal ones were rather over priced and chose a reasonably priced green one.

The Homebase watering can is made from a dark bottle green plastic and has an almost square shaped appearance to it, it has ridges going down the side of it, not that these actually serve any purpose at all. The watering can has a triangle shape on the front of it made from 2 tubes of plastic one coming from the base of the can and the other from the hole used to fill the can up, this tube actually creates a handle, these meet to create the spout, which compared to some watering cans we looked at is quite short, although plenty long enough to water our pots and hanging baskets. The plastic that the can is made from is reasonably tough and sturdy, it does not feel like it will break after just a few uses, it is reasonably thick and does not bend and dent as soon as the slightest pressure is applied to it, although I do not think it would stand being drop from the tap whilst full of water like our original watering can.

The watering can has 2 handles, one which continues along the whole top of the can to create the spout, the other is positioned at the back of the can, the one of top is ideal for holding the can whilst filling it and the one on the back is designed to hold whilst you are watering your plants, by using the handle on the back of the can it tilts it at just the right angle to pour the water at a nice steady pace without flooding the plants. The handles are large enough to accommodate all sized hands and are reasonably large, although they are not so large that your hand slips whilst you are holding it, personally I find that they are just the right size. There is a large round hole on the top of the watering can used for filling it up, this is positioned on top just at the back of the can. A lot of the watering cans we looked at had the handle placed over the hole making filling the can difficult, however the 2 handles on this can are either side of the hole and do not obstruct it at all meaning filling it from the tap is very easy, the hole is also quite large which makes filling it easy and also less messy as the water goes directly into the can and does not over flow over the edges.

One of the other things we looked for when buying our new watering can was the size of it, we wanted something reasonably big as we do have quite a lot of pots in our garden as well as a couple of hanging baskets both out the front and back of the house, if we chose a small can it would mean having to keep re-filling the can making watering the plants hard work. This can has a 6.5 litre capacity, personally we found this to be an ideal size, we only have to re-fill the can a few times and it is not so big that it is difficult for me to lift. The watering can comes with an attachable rose, this is made from the same bottle green plastic with the front of the rose where the water comes from being made of a white plastic, this simply pushes on and pulls off of the watering can spout. We use the rose most of the time as we find it is much gentler on the plants and does not beat them down or damage the petals on the flowers. Using the rose also means that the water comes out at a much slower place allowing the water to soak into the soil, using the spout along means the water pours out a lot faster and can flood the plant pot, however we do use this when water our runner bean plants as these are in a very large pot which can cope with the faster flow of water.

Our watering can as I have mentioned came from Homebase and it cost us just £6.49, this is probably not the cheapest can we could have brought had we shopped at around, however it is of a good quality and is worth the money, it was also a lot cheaper than some of the cans at Homebase and this was definitely the best designed one. Although the can is described as being ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, personally I would say it is better designed for use outside, for me this can would be a bit on the large side for indoor use, I would prefer a much smaller can to use on my indoor plants.

I would definitely recommend Homesbases 6.5L watering can, it is reasonably priced, strong and hard wearing and is also a decent sized. For us the design of this can is ideal making watering the garden quick and easy. I would suggest anyone looking to purchase a new watering can tp give this one a go as it is well worth the money.
