Advantages: Hard-wearing finish, easy to apply.

Disadvantages: Expensive.

I have had a large decked area in the garden now for many years - probably at least 10 years. Initially we applied a dark green woodstain onto the timbre decking planks and we also have what can only be described as a very fine weaved trellis on the sides of the decking. After applying the woodstain we then protected it with Cuprinol Anti-slip Decking Treatment. The treatment I buy is a 2.5l tin and it dries clear. It is there to protect the decking from the elements and leaves you with a non-abrasive, anti-slip finish. The tin also states that this product contains algicides with protect the wood from green algae and mould - the main culprits of slips and falls on untreated decking. The treatment also creates a water repellent finish which seals and protects the wood from the British weather. I always apply the Cuprinol Treatment before the Winter. After heavy Summer use it is best to treat the decking before the Winter, when most of the damage is done.

Cuprinol decking treatment can be used on all types of new or used bare and stained timber decking. The tin suggests that the 2.5l contents will be sufficient for 30 square metres of decking for a single coat. Also outlined is that to ensure the correct protection is achieved you must not apply the treatment too thinly. The first year I used this treatment it took a number of coats. Obviously this was due to the wood having absorbed a lot of woodstain and as it is very absorbent at first.

This treatment takes anywhere between 2 and 6 hours until it is dry to the touch, and it is advised not to apply the next coat until the previous coat is fully dry. Whilst wood specifically designed for use as decking is already pre-treated I wanted the reassurance of this Cuprinol product. As I always intended to use it each year i wanted to use it from day one, and I have never had any problems with the decking at any point. I also ensure the decking is cleaned regularly to make sure it is kept in top condition. I would strongly recommend this decking treatment as I have had a lot of positive experiences from its use. it is easy to apply but the cost has to be the only let-down. At around the £20 mark for a 2.5l tin it isn't cheap at all. For the cost of my decking I feel it is essential not to scrimp on poor quality decking treatments - only the very best will do.

Summary: Worth the added expense in my opinion, the very best there is when it comes to wood treatment.
