What garden is complete without a shed? None that I've ever been in charge of, I can tell you that much. I know they're not for everyone but I've always been one of those blokes who feels his garden just doesn't look like a garden without. There'd be nowhere to hide when the dishes need doing without my shed come to think of it. And heaven forbid - nowhere to store the barbie either!


I like to think of my shed as my little garden kingdom to be honest. I know, it's a bit sad really, but I'm a simple man with simple needs. Don't tell the Mrs, but there's actually a little beer fridge in mine... I ran electricity out to it last year when I was doing a lot of work out there late on in the summer nights and needed a light bulb for when it was getting dark but still light enough to work. So in went the beer fridge while I was at it.


I like to have a bit of a potter about in the shed when I'm doing a spot of DIY too. I find that the beauty of traditional sheds is that being little wooden outdoor buildings that no-one has to live in - it doesn't really matter if you make a mess. So if you need to do some sawing ready to put up shelves or fiddle around replacing a lawn mower blade (but don't want to stand out in the cold doing it) then the shed is the place to go.


When it comes to choosing a shed, I don't see that it makes much difference how much you spend or how big you buy it. It depends how many tools you own, how big your garden is and how much you want to spend on it I think. It's important to remember the work that goes into laying foundations for a big shed too so if you're just looking for somewhere to throw a few tools, you might be better off with a storage shelter instead.
