      ~~~~BAMBOO SLAT SCREEN (4x1m)~~~~
      This year my garden has had a makeover. Well, it's truer to say it is currently having one! The improvements are still very much a work in progress; the patio needs some work done to it as does the external walls and guttering at the side and the back of the house, which does spoil the look somewhat. But my husband and I have put some time, effort and money into our garden so far this year, although it is only fair to say that the effort has been mainly from my husband who has been turning his hand to gardening as well as DIY. I have been organising as usual and supplying well-earned refreshments from time to time.
      We have purchased and planted bulbs and plants, new plant containers as well as several sets of solar powered lights.
      This makeover began with us buying and putting up bamboo screening on our patio. Then my husband decided it was high time that he rendered and painted the outside of the garage. The garage is accessed from the rear of the house but has a door and wall which is situated at the end of our garden. It looked an eyesore to be perfectly honest.
      Once this task was completed, I decided that the fencing (our neighbour's fence) which was only a chain link type of affair was in a very poor state of repair. It is hard to put a fence up with the amount of trees, ivy and shrubs that grow in both gardens. Because of the falling fence I suggested we purchase a further bamboo screen to finish of that particular area. There isn't really much scope for fencing in a do it yourself way, in fact all that my husband had to fix any fencing onto was the garage itself and onto two existing low concrete posts. We didn't want to go to the bother or the expense of adding more posts so my husband said that any screening would have to be of a lower height than that which we had already bought for the patio, because he was limited in what the screen could be attached to.
      Off we trotted (well drove really!) once again to our nearest Homebase store. Once there we went out into their garden and outside DIY area. We found and chose some bamboo screening which was reduced in price from £19.99 to £13.29, although I think the former price was a bit on the steep side to be honest.
      The bamboo screening comes in a roll and is packed into a plastic container. This made it easy for us to carry and then fit it into the boot of our car. It is easy to transport and can even be carried for some distance. Alternatively, Homebase will deliver and their standard delivery of small items (one delivery person) is said to usually arrive to your door within three days at a cost of £3.95.
      This screening is one metre high, which is just about high enough for the purpose we wanted it for, although really I would have preferred something just a little higher but as we didn't have much scope for fixing this was the best we could have in this location.
      It consists of natural coloured bamboo slats (bamboo cane cut into half lengthwise) which are made into a screen by means of thin wires being attached and running along the length of the screen.
      FIXING THE SCREENING
      My husband attached the screening by making use of green plastic garden plant wire/tie. He attached the screen as best he could by tying the green wire to the screen and posts. In a garden which has more wooden posts or fencing already exists but requires screens to go over this then a better tighter screening effect can be achieved.
      For us it is an awkward spot and so won't stand that straight. Nevertheless, it does make us feel more private and does afford some privacy if we want to sit at the end of our garden and just, in my opinion, manages to tidy the end of the garden up a little.
      USES
      We purchased the bamboo slat screening to help to tidy up a corner of the garden and give a more private, relaxed feel to an exposed area. Of course, this is a low in height screen being just one metre high but we have tree branches hanging above it and so with the addition of this screen this area is now a more pleasant spot than it was before when the gaping chain link fence wasn't covered in bamboo slats.
      As this is a natural type of product being bamboo it blends well with the foliage in my garden.
      I find that the screening has various uses, the obvious one being that it does help to provide some privacy, and it can also help greatly to improve one's garden by screening untidy areas.
      I have heard of this product being used as a windbreak but I don't know how effective this would be as the slats aren't that closely fitted together. I would think it would provide some protection from the wind for delicate plants.
      I think it also lends itself well to making a nice backdrop for plants especially small climbers.
      I like the fact that it lets some light through; it isn't solid as there are slight gaps between the bamboo slats but it does still gives the feeling of privacy and certainly does make areas private, unless of course someone is very intent on peering through but fortunately I don't have that problem with my neighbours.
      PRICE
      The bamboo slat screening panel is currently selling for £13.29 (Was £19.99) from Homebase stores and can be purchased on-line or in store. And remember you can collect Nectar points from Homebase. I collected twenty-eight Nectar points with my purchase, which is a nice little bonus.
      OUR THOUGHTS OVERALL
      We are pleased with this purchase. I would say that it isn't as good as traditional fencing panels but feel that how good it looks and for how long it stays looking good depends to some extent on how it has been fixed in place. If you have several fence posts or are fixing the screen to an existing fence, perhaps in disrepair, then it should be more secure and will be able to be stretched out better.
      Homebase might be seeing me again soon as I may well invest in another couple of these screen lengths to go along the whole length of the garden, up to the start of the patio.
