Bulldog Premier Tanged Transplanting Trowel
by MEL0611
Before you continue reading this review, I must point out that I am certainly not a pro gardener, far from it, I have to call my parents every time I start gardening as I have no idea really of the difference between weeds and plants! I know that I like things to look neat and tidy and I like things to look colourful, I actually enjoy ... doing some gardening, working in an office it is nice to be outdoors and get some fresh air so even though I limit myself to planting in my pots, I actually quite enjoy it. One of the tools that I use to plant my bulbs and bedding plant is the Bulldog Trowel, here are my thoughts.
It was only quite recently that I started to build on my selection of garden tools. This was one that I happened to get in my local branch of the Range store. I had gone in there for something completely different and for some reason ended up in the gardening section and this was the result! I had needed a trowel as it was the one item I was without, I had inherited a garden fork from my Mums no longer wanted but a trowel was needed. This one cost me £9.99 and after consulting with my Mum before the purchase was apparently not a bad price to pay! I have seen that you can buy the Bulldog trowel online from Amazon as well as being able to pick it up in certain garden centres.
The trowel came with no packaging; it was a sort of you get what you see. The handle is made from wood and then the trowel itself is made from steel. It is only when you begin to start using the trowel that you get to feel that it is really comfortable. The handle of the trowel is varnished and so it feels quite smooth in your hands and it sort of fits into the curve of your hand so it doesn't feel awkward to grip, even when you are using this for some time, you don't get that achy feeling on it.
The trowel manages to cut into the soil of my pots with ease and I have found that it is also great when I have tidied up my flower beds as it will dig small sections of weeds and old plants away, it will also the soil around really easy and for some reason it makes whatever you are doing feel quite lightweight.
I have no real criticism of the trowel, the that that perhaps I would like it to have the actual size of the trowel to be a little larger, as opposed to it being thin, I think it would help to be that little bit wider but that is just my personal opinion from when I have been gardening and think it would be better when turning soil over.
In summary, I think that this is a great buy and as I mention, even though I am not a gardener, I think this is great and a good tool to use.
5 out of 5 from me

Bulldog 7111 Evergreen Hand Fork
by sympatic
I only bought this garden fork on an impulse after buying something else on Amazon and it appeared as a linked product and as I had £6 of Dooyoo gift certificates left and the hand fork was only £5.71 I thought why not. Unfortunately this hand fork is rather poorly made and not at all user friendly so it was a waste of my money and it ... has since been replaced with a wilkinson sword one.
One of the problems with this hand fork is that the handle is very smooth and unless you have great grip on your gardening gloves then I find it too slippy and my hand moves about which if used for a long time means you could develop blisters. I also do not like the angle of handle to fork as it is not a comfortable one, it seems like a product that was either made for someone with a strange grip or was never tested with customers, neither myself or my other half could get on with it.
The head of the fork is carbon steel epoxy coated (I have no idea what that means) and while it does cut into the soil perfectly well the relatively small size does restrict its effectiveness. If you have window boxes and just need something to administer to them then this will probably do the job as it will only been used a small amount however for more serious gardening it is not good enough and for that reason along with the poor design features I would not recommend it. Bulldog 7128 Evergreen Plastic Leaf Rake

Bulldog 7128 Evergreen Plastic Leaf Rake
http://www.bulldogtools.co.uk
I must begin this review by confessing that I didn't actually purchase this product for myself, my mother in law picked it up for us when we moved house and gained a garden, complete with lawn. On that basis, I don't actually know how much she ... paid for it but you can currently buy this rake from Amazon for £13.07 which seems like pretty good value to me.
We inherited my mother in laws old lawnmower too as she upgraded hers around the time that we moved house which was excellent for us. Our lawn isn't too big (around 12 by 6 feet) so cutting the grass and then raking up the debris isn't a big job and it does feel very satisfying to smell the delicious freshly cut grass and sit back and look at the freshly cut lawn.
Bulldog are renowned for making quality garden, contractor and agricultural tools and are a British company who have been trading for 230 years. They sell a massive range of items and are currently endorsed by Alan Titchmarsh who has a range of tools that can be viewed on their website (see address above) I am quite small and so the reason that my mother in law selected this particular rake is because it is lightweight and therefore, easy to use with minimum effort - my kind of product!
I was initially unsure of whether the rake might be a little bit flimsy and less substantial that the more traditional wood and metal version but was pleasantly surprised to find that it is robust and flexible without breaking or losing its shape. If anything, it actually seems more flexible and therefore more effective than traditional rakes might be and doesn't get caught in the grass the way that I remember.
It sounds obvious but to use, simply draw the rake over the cut grass (or other garden matter that you want to rake up) and pull it towards you. The cut grass is quickly gathered up making it easy to collect and dispose of. I'm afraid I don't have a compost heap so this had to be chucked into my garden waste recycling bin but by next year, I hope to resolve this problem by creating my own compost heap.
The task of collecting the grass takes just minutes and I find the plastic garden rake much more effective than the more traditional version. It is flexible without being flimsy and quickly gathers the grass, leaving my lawn looking fab. Overall, the task is quick and simple which leaves plenty of time to spend on more fun outdoor activities, such as relaxing on my newly cut lawn with a beer, a much better use of my summer day!
This product offers excellent value for money and is easy and effective to use. Being plastic, it is much more lightweight than the more traditional alternative and also gathers more grass first time due to being more flexible. It will also avoid rust and rotting while being stored in winter months so may last longer too. Read the complete review |
