Wilkinson Sword Wooden FSC Hand Trowel
by CallMeRalph
Recently we moved into a new house and this house had a very small garden and a green house. To be perfectly honest we would happily get rid of the green house to make a little bit more space, but as this is a rented property it's not an option. So a few weeks ago we decided to make use of the green house and also plant some new grass on ... our small patch of soil that we have. When we were doing this we realised we were going to need a few tools. Not wanting to spend a fortune and realising that we weren't going to be doing any serious gardening, we just bought a few simple cheap ones. This was one of them, the Wilkinson Sword trowel.
The trowel is pretty much a basic one with nothing to special about it. As you can see it has a nice wooden handle and then a metal digging part. The handle has a nice feel to it and although I wasn't using for very long, I would say that it fits well into your hand and given extensive use should still feel quite comfortable. The metal section seems pretty solid, it's strong and unlikely to bend if you hit a stray rock or something like that. One thing I quite liked about the metal part of the trowel was that when you put it down on the concrete it makes a ringing ding sound. This is no way really contributes to the performance of the trowel but it always made me smile when it happens.
When it comes to price and value this is pretty good. There are probably cheaper ones out there but this one just cost us around £5. As Wilkinson Sword is a pretty well known name I assumed we would be getting a decent quality trowel and as I also liked the look of this one I thought it a decent option.
After using the trowel you have of course the option of cleaning it. To be honest I didn't bother as the ground we were digging in was fairly dry so the dirt just brushed of fairly easily. I would say that if you were going to give this a good clean it should not be overly hard and it should clean up nicely.
So overall I would have to say this is a very good little trowel. It's perfect for those simple little jobs around the garden, it might not be ideal for heavy work or regular use, but for the average household I can't see any reason why you would not buy this one, unless of course you have no garden. Although we have only had this trowel for a short time, I would imagine it will be one we are using or many years into the future. So all round a very good little trowel. Read the complete review |

Yeoman Carbon Potting Trowel
by l500589
Having moved into my new home last spring, I had a fair bit of gardening jobs that needed doing, which my dad was only too happy to point out to me on the day we moved in. Nothing major, but lots of weeding, and planting and neatening up borders etc.
My dad being somewhat of a gardening expert likes to give me tips on what needs ... doing (and I sure do need them most of the time), and it was no massive surprise to me that my mum and dad got me a little collection of gardening tools as part of our house warming gift.
Within this little selection there was a Yeoman gardening trowel, which came in very handy last year, and I expect it will do again this year.
The Yeoman potting trowel (pictured above) is a very strong and determined piece of kit. The head of the trowel is constructed form carbon steel, and the design of it is very slim and pointed, making it excellent to dig with in hard ground, especially if the ground contains lots of stones. The yellow wooden handle has the brand name 'Yeoman' stamped on in bold black lettering, and has been designed in such a way that it is shaped to fit nicely into the contours of the hand, thus reducing the work that the arm and wrist needs to do, and also preventing blistering of the hand and fingers.
There is a small hole at the top of the handle which has a strap looped through it. This strap is probably designed to hang the trowel up on when not in use, but it also acts as a good carry strap for transporting it around the garden.
~~~~~ My Opinion ~~~~~
This is a fairly impressive little trowel as far as I am concerned. As it is designed to be a 'potting' trowel it is very slim, sharp and pointed in design which makes it easy to dig with.
The handle is fitted to the trowel head very firmly indeed, and gives no impression of weakness even during a tough digging session.
The durability of the materials coupled with the comfort of the design, gives a perfect little tool for cultivating, planting and digging small areas such as beds, borders and containers.
I have used my trowel numerous times over the last 12 months and it is still in a very good condition. At Christmas I received a Metal detector as a gift off my wife, and I have used this trowel a lot to dig little holes in all sorts of soils and muddy ground once the alarm sounds on the detector. It has never struggled, and never been bent out of shape no matter what the terrain).
Having received this trowel as a gift, I am not sure what it originally cost, but a quick search shows me that it is available on Amazon for £4:99, although I doubt my dad purchased it online, so I would be willing to bet that it is available at a whole host of gardening and DIY stores.
Thanks for reading.
