There are certain pieces of garden equipment which it goes without saying you HAVE to have in your plant fighting arsenal, and a reliable, well-made, easy to maintain garden rake definitely needs to be within that prestigious collection. So when I bought myself a 'Bulldog 7106 Evergreen' I was expecting a lot from such a simple piece of kit, and would surely test the rake to the edge of its performance capabilities!
Looking at the design of the thing, there are several options developers can go down in regards to the contraptions head and fixed or un-fixed arm. The Bulldog one has an epoxy coated metal (aluminium) head boasting 12-spokes at a reasonably distanced diameter. Roughly 50CM the head allows for the completion of minor to medium garden tasks with little hassle, and the light-weight aluminium metal acts to reduce strain on the user during longer tasks! Though certain sizes of materials (...usually dampened) can become stuck between the spokes, the design allows for these to be shaken free easily due to the spokes angled construction.
The arm of the tool is PVC plastic coated aluminium set straight for a simple to use and understand build. This arm is extremely strong despite its weight and no amount of non-mechanical pressure can bend it, meaning it is highly durable and long-lasting. The joint between the arm and the head is also very well constructed allowing for a strong and long-lasting structure. Having the PVC plastic lets the company place its name on the device as well as giving the tool a water and moisture protective outlay. Similarly, the PVC has the job of providing a user with excellent grip and stability. Despite this, the plastic is not needed in keeping the metal dry as such, as the coated aluminium is rust proof anyway.
I really enjoy using my Bulldog rake and find simple garden tasks are made simpler in its deployment. It is especially good for raking up dry leaves, dead grass and gravel drives, I know this as I use the rake for those quick tasks a few times every week. If for some reason however these tasks are not able to be completed due to a 'failure' in the device, luckily it comes with a water-tight 10 year guarantee against faults which is very useful indeed.
In general I cannot fault this well constructed, long-lasting, durable, reliable, anciently engineered tool which I'm happy to say still has a vital role to play in the technologically advanced world we now live in. I would recommend this tool to any age group as despite its fixed size, the low weight makes it easy for anyone to use.
When it comes to preparing the soil for planting nothing beats the Bulldog Evergreen garden rake. The rake looks the part, with a PVC coated lightweight aluminium shaft and a grip that is comfortable. The head of the rake is epoxy coated to resist rust and is of an aluminium(silver) finish. The shaft is green with 'Bulldog' written distinctly on it. The Evergreen range of gardening tools come with a 10 year guarantee against faulty workmanship and tools but I have no experience of how this works and wouldn't like to comment on what would fall under this.
The long handle of the rake allows for ease of use, and the lightweight design makes it perfect for any level of gardener. The 12 teeth are great for raking up leaves and for soil preparation. Although some rakes are endorsed by celebrity gardeners or carry a fancy name, this Bulldog rake comes with a small pricetag to attract custom, and it carries out the jobs I ask of it with relative ease. I paid around £15 for the rake, and the quality feel and looks are coupled with its ability to tackle its gardening tasks efficiently.
Ideal tool for the preparation of soil prior to planting. The head is epoxy coated for rust resistance, with a 54in PVC aluminium coated lightweight shaft and comfort feel grip.
