Faithfull Stainless Steel Digging Spade
Advantages: Light weight, Quality materials, Durable, Comfortable, Easy to use, Simple design
Disadvantages: None really besides the high price tag
The Faithfull Stainless Steel Digging Garden Spade is a gardening tool used to cultivate land by digging and breaking up soil. I bought my Faithfull steel garden spade about 5 years ago from a local tool shop for £20. The tool has been a durable and useful addition to my gardening tool collection and sees frequent use.
The shaft of the spade is made from ash, which is a light brown coloured material that is hard wearing and smooth. I think the shaft must have been polished and sanded as the handle on mine is quite shiny. The actual spade part of the product is made from stainless steel which is a bright shiny colour and is easy to clean when you have mud on it. The tread/platform on the head of the spade is fairly broad which allows you to stand and push your foot on it for certain digging strokes easy. There is a small metal logo placed on the shaft of the spade, which is gold in colour and has the company/product engraved upon it. The product weighs about 2kg which is light for a spade but still remains sturdily built. All in all, the product looks simple yet the ash wood finish on the handle and stainless steel made spade make the product look clean and classy.
Ease of use
The product is easy to use so far as using a spade is concerned. The handle is a good thickness and not too thick at the expense of a good grip. The handle is smooth and sanded which means it doesn't tear into your hands from digging. The tread/platform of the spade is well made and broad, which allows you to stand on the product or push your foot down on it easily and comfortably. The length of the product is of a good effective size as well, I'm slightly above average height and I've found the product suits my frame very well and would be suitable for most other people too. The product is light in weight too at only 2kg, which is beneficial as it lessens fatigue. The light weight construction could be beneficial to older people as well.
The durability of the product is excellent. Faithfull have made a brilliant job of building the spade and done so from quality componenets. The ash wood handle is solid, smooth and tough. The stainless steel spade is hardened and due to the nature of stainless steel should remain corrosion and rust free if you take proper care of it. The spade is also firmly attached to the shaft and I've never noticed it come loose. I've had the product for 5 years now and the stainless steel spade has never really been dented or broken and the ash handle has never snapped or splintered. I can see with proper care, the spade should last you decades if not a lifetime. After 5 years, mine still looks as good as new with a quick clean to remove the dirt on the stainless steel which is easily done.
The product is not a cheap product for the consumer to buy. 5 years ago I paid £20 to buy it from a local gardening store. I've looked on Amazon UK and the product is now retailing for £25, whilst on eBay it is not £29 now. I've noticed a Silverline stainless steel spade on Amazon which sells for just below £15 and looks identical to my Faithfull stainless steel digging spade. The price of £20 years ago was reasonable as the spade is durable, well made, light in weight and has a classy finish but a price tag of £25-£29 is just too much for any spade in my opinion.
To conclude, I'm very pleased I purchased the Faithfull stainless steel digging spade for my garden as it has been a worthy investment. It is light, durable, has good tread/platform and a simple but attractive design. It is everything you could ever wish for a spade but with a current retail price of £25-£29 online, it is expensive. If I was to buy the spade now I probably wouldn't for such a high price and probably choose a cheaper spade like the £15 stainless steel ones made by Silverline. But if you are willing to spend quite a lot of money on a spade or can pick one up in a sale then by all means purchase one as it has been a brilliant investment for me. Thanks for reading my review.
