Green Blade Garden Netting
Advantages: Works, multipurpose
Disadvantages: Breaks easily (though simple to fix), not that easy to work with (needs 2 people min)
I bought this Green Blade garden netting from a local pound shop for, unsurprisingly, £1. I was planning to use it to cover my outdoor tortoise enclosure, since there are a lot of cats around here, and the tortoises are still small enough that birds are a concern. When I saw this in the pound shop, and saw you were getting 2 metres by 10 metres, I thought I had to try it; a lot cheaper than the chicken wire we thought we would need!
The netting itself is bright green, and it comes all rolled and folded in a white string bag with a simple green label stating what it is, and what it can be used for. It's main function is to protect seedlings, vegetables and strawberry and soft fruit plants, but of course you can use it for anything you might use netting for. The mesh is 25mm x 25mm (approx 1" x 1"), this is the size of the holes. This is a perfect size to deter birds as they will not get through this.
The netting is thin plasticky material rather than fibre, which is probably why it's available for such a low price. It does stretch out easily, so you really do get the whole 2m x 10m out of this. I would say though you need at least 2 people as you will never get anything out of it alone! It is too light and tightly folded to 'flick' it to unwrap it; you need one person on each end or it will just keep curling and not doing anything you want it to! It is also quite a fragile netting, and as we were attaching it we found that a few bits did break under a bit of pressure. I wasn't upset by this though, as it was after all only £1 and I found these breaks were easy to fix - even though we had stretched the netting taut over the top of the tortoise 'box', the edges of the breaks came together easily for me to tie together and close the hole. So if you have patience (I borrowed some from the other half) and take care while using it then you'll be fine.
We attached it using fencing staples, and although the strings of the netting are thin they stayed in place and did not snap when we hammered the staples over them. The good thing about it being thin is that even though it's bright green, unless it's gathered in folds or bunched together it's not very visible so it won't hide your plants and ruin your viewing pleasure, or in my case, interfere with looking in at my tortoises!
Overall, I am really pleased I spotted this - it does the job I wanted it to and it does it perfectly well. My tortoises are now safe outside to enjoy the Summer (what we get of it!) Why spend loads on fancy netting or chicken wire if this will do it? Having used this admittedly not for it's original purpose, I am confident in saying it will do the job of protecting your seedlings as well, once you get the netting under control. If you don't find it in any local shops, you can buy it from Amazon for a little over £2 delivered. This is also a price I would happily pay, and if I need more netting for other projects (likely!) I will certainly try to get this first. Using it a second time would be faster and easier, since we now know how to handle it. A brilliant price for something that often comes with a surprisingly high price tag, just don't expect miracles for the price, this is CHEAP (but functional) netting!
