Makes the lawn look much better!

At my previous house I lived alone for about thirteen years so all the gardening had to be done by me or it didn't get done. I had a small garden at the front of the house with a pocket handkerchief lawn and another slightly larger garden at the back of the house with another small lawn.

One of the jobs that I needed to do once each year in spring was to rake the two small lawns to get the moss out and give it a bit of a boost before its growing season.

The tool that I used for this job was a Silverline Lawn Rake. I have no idea how much I paid for mine but they are currently on sale on the Amazon website for £6.42 and delivery is free within the UK.

The lawn rake differs from the standard garden rake in two ways. Firstly a garden rake is straight and set at right angles to the handle and a lawn rake is a fan shape and is set in line with the handle. The fan shaped rake is made up of sixteen thin prongs which are bent over at the ends so that you are able to pull things along using the rake.

The Silverline Lawn Rake weighs 1.2kg so it is nice and light making it easier to use. The straight handle is 1200mm long which is about the right length for me to use - I am about 5 foot 6 inches by the way.

The rake can be used for a variety of things such as raking up leaves in the autumn or as I said earlier raking out the moss from your lawn in the spring. If you were clearing leaves the way to use the rake would be to place the head of the rake on the ground, grip the handle and pull it towards you gathering the leaves inside the spread of the rake as you go.

To rake the moss out of the lawn requires a lot more effort in that you need to pull the rake across the grass whilst pressing down on it thus pulling the moss out of the lawn. I used to find this extremely effective (I say used to because I don't have a lawn where I live now) and I would get a lot of moss out of each lawn. The lawns would look a little bit scruffy when the raking had been finished but they would soon settle down once the grass began to grow and they would both look much better for the fact that I had raked them.

The only thing that I didn't like about this job was the fact that I have a muscle across my chest about where my diaphragm would be that I swear I only used once a year for lawn raking! For days afterwards I would hardly be able to move as this muscle ached like mad! Mind you it was worth it as the lawn was much improved for all the hard work done.

In conclusion I would definitely recommend this lawn rake. I found it strong enough to do the job, easy enough to use and it is cheap to buy in the first place. Despite the fact that I used to ache when I had done the job the lawn was always improved by the use of this rake!
