Since moving into this house, I've been much more active about getting the garden done - I used to pay a friend to do it in the old house, but I've taken it on myself now that I have more free time, and I've found I quite enjoy it, although it has meant I've had to spend a fair bit kitting myself out with the tools needed, since I didn't own any. One of the items I purchased was this Silverline Rake, which I purchased from amazon using my dooyoo vouchers. It cost me £6.84 + £2.50 UK delivery, which work out to less than a tenner, and would be a good bargain if the rake was good quality.
Unfortunately, the first one arrived having suffered some knocks in the post, and with two bent tines. It did however arrive nice and quickly, and the company (Ironmongery Online) were just as quick about sending out a replacement that wasn't damaged.
It is a surprisingly good quality rake for such a low price. I like that the rake head has short thick tines, ideal for battling with those annoying sticky weed things that seem to take over my garden. The rake head itself is made of some kind of metal, and is epoxy hammer coated. It has a nice weight to it, a little over 1.3kg, enough to feel reassuringly heavy and durable in the hands, but not enough to make it hard to use. I did find that getting the grass out of the tines had to be done manually with my hands or my shoe, rather than just tapping the rake on the edge of the compost bin to get it all off, which was mildly annoying at first, but which I soon got use to and stopped noticing as much.
The handle is a good length, and there is a comfortable black grip at the top end - I personally feel this grip could do with extending further down the handle, since most people I know, myself included, tend to use a rake with two hands rather than one.
The head and the handle are securely attached to each other - I have no fear that I'm going to catch the head on a rock and it's going to come off. I like that the handle has a small hole for hanging this up - I didn't have any nail or screw that would fit through, but a bit or string tied through soon sorted that out, and it is a nice touch that the way the hole is positioned forces this to be hung with the blades inwards - a useful safety feature.
Silverline hand tools are guaranteed for life - however I have no expectations of needing to call in this guarantee, as so far my rake has performed very well, raking up grass strimmings, knotted and tangled weeds, and raking rocks out of the soil ready for seed planting. I honestly wasn't expecting this level of quality for the price I paid - I thought I would use this item to tidy up the garden that was a total mess when I moved in, and then probably replace it after a month or two, but have no plans to replace this at all.
Great quality for the money, the only real quibbles being that the soft grip portion needs to extend further down the handle, and the having to remove grass and weeds from the tines manually rather than knocking out on the side of the bin for which I'm deducting one star
High quality heavy duty garden rake at an exceptional price. Epoxy coated hammered finished head with tubular handle and comfortable black hand grip.
