Spear and Jackson County Daisy Grubber.

I have a Spear and Jackson daisy grubber.
Do you know what a daisy grubber is? I did not know that this tool that I inherited from my dad was called this till I started writing these gardening reviews.

What is a Daisy grubber*

A daisy grubber is a tool for grubbing out / digging out daisies and other pernicious weeds like dandelions. No country house lawn is perfect if it has daisies growing in it, or such was the thought of many proud green lawn owners any daisies had to be grubbed out . Personally I think a lawn with white daisies speckling it is very pretty. Daisy is a perennial and grows as a rosette its roots can be difficult to remove from a lawn without spoiling the lawn. A daisy grubber is a good tool for making the least disturbance to the grass around the daisy.
A daisy grubber is a long two pronged fork like straight blade with a handle. This then is speared into the ground and around the roots the roots can then be lifted out of the ground. This is usually a very effective way of dealing with weeds like daisies, dandelions and plantains. Good for weeds with tap roots

*This Spear and Jackson daisy grubber*

Size *
The handle length is 127mm/,5 inches the blade about 140mm /6 inches long. The width of the blade is about 30mm /1.1/2 inch wide

Handle**
The handle is a weather proofed hard wood. This handle does not have a hole drilled in it at the top so you can thread a string through it to hang it up for storage. The handle is comfortable to hold a good size for a hand to grasp. The handle is fixed to the blade wit a ferrule (metal ring) this helps keep it firmly in position

Blade ***
The blade of a tool like this is important. This daisy grubber blade is made to the same good standard as other Spear and Jackson blades it has a carbon steel head, epoxy coated for improved resistance to rust, scratches, This coating will protect the blade from alkaline and humidity in the soil. The blade is strong It is not easy to bend will withstand the force needed to grub out those weeds.

Long levity /durability ****
There is a 10 year guarantee with this tool but from the way it looks I expect the one I have to last me a lifetime , it is several years old already tool is humidity and alkaline in the soil this product will last for years.
I find this tool quite handy I had too weed around my broad beans at the weekend and found this ideal to disturb weeds without getting too close to my broad bean roots. I can see it being a handy too l even though I like to see daisies and a few dandelions in my grass

Price *****
A Spear and Jackson daisy grubber will cost £7.48p from http://www.tooled-up.com
£6.00 from http://www.greenfingers.com/ RRP is about £9.00 I believe . You should be able to buy this tool on and off line fairly easily.

Spear and Jackson *******
To finish with a little about Spear and Jackson . A Sheffield firm making steel products since 17 60 founded by John Love and Alexander Spear. The name Jackson appeared after Sam Jackson - joined the partnership sometime around 18 30. Spear and Jackson are a well known name with centuries of experience making garden and other tools the products good . I have used many of their gardening tools so I would have no qualms about recommending a Spear and Jackson product like this Daisy grubber

Have fun grubbing up those Daisies and weeds Mary

Summary: A tool for digging up daisies and other weeds especially from your lawn

A weed is a plant in the wrong place. I personally like daisies in my lawn but on a perfectly manicured lawn someone might not

"daisies and **other** pernicious weeds like . . . " - I don't consider daisies as weeds!
