When I lived in the Midlands I had a house with two lawns - one at the front and one at the back. The one at the front also had two flowers beds cut into it so there were a lot of edges for me to cut each time I mowed the lawn.
I used to use the ordinary garden shears to trim around all the edges but, because they only had short handles, there was a lot of bending and / or kneeling involved.
I wondered whether to treat myself to a pair of long handles shears but had been putting it off as I wasn't sure that they would be good enough to do the job and leave a nice neat edge.
Eventually I decided to buy the Wilkinson Sword Long Handled Edging Shears as I knew that Wilkinson Sword was a good make with an excellent reputation and I hoped that they would be good enough for the job.
As a bit of background information I have discovered that the Wilkinson Sword gardening tools are German engineered products and every product in the range is put through rigorous quality tests ensuring high quality design, durability and strength. So that would explain why they were so good.
I can't remember how much I paid for mine so I have done some research on the Internet and have found them for sale at various places for round about £20. Incidentally since these shears have sharp blades they are not available for sale to anyone under the age of eighteen.
The shears are made up of long steel tubular handles - about 100cm long - with nice comfortable 'softgrip' handles to make them easier to hold onto without getting any blisters on your hands.
The short blades are set at right angles to the handles and are made from heat treated carbon steel for added strength.
The whole thing weighs just 1.79kg which is about 4lb so I found it light enough to use for long enough to do all my edges without getting too tired.
I was very impressed with these shears as the blades are strong and very sharp meaning that the grass that was left sticking out over the edge of the lawn after mowing all got trimmed off easily first time. I didn't want to end up bending the grass and having to go over it again to cut it. The only bending that I then had to do was to pick up the grass to put into the compost bin.
The handles of the shears were just the right length for me - I am about 5 foot 6 inches tall - and they were very comfortable to use. When I had finished a wipe of the blades was all that was needed to keep them in perfect condition.
I always stored mine in the shed hanging on a large nail by placing them with the blades closed so that the nail was in the angle where the blades met the handles. That meant that they were safely out of the way which is good for me as I am known to be quite clumsy at times!
The shears come with a ten year guarantee and were actually voted Best Buy in Gardening Which in 2008 and having used them I can see why too!
I would recommend these shears to anyone wishing to make their life in the garden easier - they are light, strong, effective, easy to use, reliable and available at a reasonable price - what more could you want?
The Wilkinson Sword Lifestyle Long Handled Edging Shear is the perfect tool for your garden. It is perfect for trimming lawn edges. The longer length handles (100cm) help reduce bending and back strain.
