Tesco Hiball Glasses
I bought these just before Christmas as we seem to have had quite a few breakages and I felt we needed a few extra glasses to cope with entertaining and family staying over the festive period. I didn't want to spend a lot as they do get broken quite frequently in our house and the price oof £3.25 for a four pack of glasses I thought would take some beating.
I chose these when in Tesco doing a shop and was attracted to them as they looked a bit different with their curved shape and solid base. I think they look quite classy for the price and I am quite happy to have my gin and tonic in here as well as finding them perfectly acceptable to serve cordial for the children as well as they are not going to be a major disaster if one breaks.
They look nice on a dinner table for a glass of water and I take one to bed with me for my bedside drink of water as well. They are a decent weight so they are not going to be knocked over easily as the base is a good deal weightier than the top.
They are dishwasher safe but this is where I find them a pain as they are so bottom heavy they keep falling over in the dishwasher and they take some balancing with mugs to keep them upside down. I have not lost any in the dishwasher and they come out looking sparkling and unscratched.
Hand washing is also a pain in that when I put them on the draining side to drain upside down I have to be really careful as the slightest knock has them over. My daughter has these as well and they have a double decker drainer and these glasses will not stand on the drainer so we need to put them flat and dry them up straight away.
The glasses are slightly wider and rounder towards the bottom and widest in the middle where you hold the glass. They are 14.5 cm tall and holds 500 ml which is a can or bottle of cider or even a beer if you wanted. They hold a decent amount for a refreshing drink of water or squash. I find that the rim is neither too thin nor too chunky. I hate really thick rimmed glasses and also those that are too fine are far too easy to break and not good for children.
These are great looking glasses but the shape does have disadvantages. The children find them quite hard to hold so I now give them other glasses. The balancing act needed for the dishwasher and draining them is also annoying so I am not sure i will be buying them again. I think I would go for something with a bit more balance, not quite so bottom heavy and a straighter line down the sides.

When we first moved into our house, nearly 7 years ago now we bought some cheap drinking glasses from Habitat which actually lasted us really well. The last one broke about Christmas time and so we needed to get some more so my husband found these ridiculously cheap glasses in the Tesco homeware section. A pack of 4 glasses cost just £3.75 so he got two packs.
The glasses definitely look a lot more expensive than their £0.94 price tag and we are enjoying using them in our house. The glasses are in a hiball shape, hence the name, meaning they are slightly bubble shaped in the middle and then are thinner at the top and the bottom. The top of the glass is nice to drink out of because it has a slightly thicker rim to it so you are not scraping your mouth like on some other glasses that have a wafer thin top to them. The opening at the top is just big enough when you take a drink to fit your mouth in as the other side touches the bridge of my nose, but big enough to drink out of so no problem.
The bottom of the glass is almost an inch thick and is made of see through glass so these glasses are very sturdy on their bottoms and stand up well. This bottom part though makes the glasses quite heavy, a bit too heavy if I'm honest so this is not a glass that we give to our kids just yet as they find them quite difficult to hold on to.
The glasses have a 500ml capacity and I find this is quite big and definitely enough for a glass of water during the day or with dinner in the evening. We use these glasses throughout the day because I think they can be used for everyday use as well as looking nice enough to put on a dinner table to serve guests with as well. The shape gives them a bit of a cool, novel look, different from just a regular glass.
The glasses are dishwasher safe. I always put mine in there and have had no problems with any scratches or breakages. In fact, I think the dishwasher gives them a nice sparkle and they always come out looking as good as new.
A perfect glass at a great price.
Tesco high ball glasses
When moving house and starting with nothing i decided to put in quite a large order at tesco, www.tesco.com. the products are also available at the larger tesco stores but given that delivery was free to my very close local tesco store i decided to save myself the harassment of fighting my way through the shop.
The glasses came in a pack of 4, neatly packaged in cardboard. Once I got them out I gave them the usual wash and then started to use them immediately.
They are the typical high ball style, being slightly wider and rounder towards the bottom and narrower towards the top. They are 14.5 cm tall which is a good height and with the 500 ml capacity they certainly hold enough liquid for a drink. At their widest they are about 6.5 cm so nice and comfortable to hold. I don't like glasses which feel too heavy and thick but these feel and look quite chunky without being overly heavy or cumbersome. The rim of the glasses are comfortable to drink from being neither too thick o r too thin. This means that they don't hurt my mouth when I have a drink because I have had glasses in the past which are way too thin at the rim and almost sharp.
The glasses are dishwasher safe but as with most glasses if not all, they are not oven or microwave safe.
The pack of 4 glasses cost the princely sum of £3.25 so they certainly won't break the bank, and its not a major travesty if one breaks.
These glasses are definitely everyday glasses especially since they aren't expensive and can take a lot of wear and tear. The usual care has to be taken when washing them but they do wash successfully in the dishwasher.
As well as using them on a daily basis I also use them when I have people round and find they are a good size for adults and children to use. We can get a good spirit and mixer drink with ice in these and for children they hold a good quantity of juice and are chunky enough so that I don't worry about the glasses smashing in their hands!
Before the price and quality I would definitely recommend these. Given that they are lasting well with only one breakage so far ( my fault) I think I will buy a couple more packs of these so that I always have plenty of matching glasses.
