Advantages: Sturdy umbrella, provides a large area of coverage

Disadvantages: Massive & a bit awkward to hold

I must start by saying I have no interest in golf, and I bought this umbrella for purely practical purposes. I was out in town doing some shopping and got caught in an unexpected shower, when I spotted that Sports Direct had cleverly positioned a massive stand containing these Dunlop Golf Umbrellas right by the door. Very convenient considering the unpredictable British summer weather! The RRP is £9.99 but they were reduced down to just £2.99 which I thought was a brilliant bargain, and are still available and selling at this price so I think it must be a constant price cut.

Product description: "The Dunlop Golf Umbrella is perfect for keeping in your golf bag for those rainy days out on the green, with a 30 inch, waterproof span to keep you sheltered from the rain. A shaped handle provides comfort whilst holding, and a pinch and push system allows you to easily and quickly put up this umbrella."

This Dunlop umbrella comes in a wide range of colour designs, some are plain and some have alternate coloured sections. I chose this umbrella in a green and black design which I think looks quite nice, but I've since seen them in pink which I think makes the umbrella look a bit less manly and I'd be very tempted to buy another one in pink if I need to replace this one.

I cannot comment on this umbrella's suitability for use while golfing, as I have only used it to provide cover from the rain when I'm out and about walking to and fro as part of my daily routine. The umbrella is very large and bulky which can make it a bit inconvenient to carry when it's folded up as it takes up a lot of space and there's no way you can fit it inside a bag to leave your hands free. I tend to reserve this umbrella for very bad rainy weather so that I'm not carrying it about needlessly, and it works perfectly against heavy rain which smaller handbag sized umbrellas might not cope so well with.

When fully opened this umbrella provides a large area of coverage which is perfect for keeping you nice and dry underneath it. It is large enough to keep my head, and upper body covered and has the added bonus of not leaving my shoulder bag sticking out in the rain like smaller umbrellas do, so my bag and everything inside is protected as well. The large size does become inconvenient when you don't have the large open space of a golf course to walk around on, and it can be quite troublesome when I walking along the pavement and have to pass someone coming in the opposite direction. I usually opt to fold it down slightly so that it leaves enough room to walk past without smacking the other person on the head!

The umbrella is quite weighty and heavier than usual because of its large size. It has a moulded plastic hand grip which is quite comfortable to use, but sometimes I will have to hold onto it with both hands to keep it steady as it is heavy and difficult to balance in windy weather. Saying that, it has proved to be quite durable and is sturdy enough to use during heavy downpours and stands firm against strong winds. The material is made of 100% polyester which stops the rain from soaking through and allows it to just roll down and off the sides. It is also quick drying which is handy so it can be stored away after just a short drying time, without the fabric remaining damp and going smelly.

Overall I'd definitely recommend this Dunlop Golf Umbrella, especially considering the bargain price you can buy one for. The large size is both a good and a bad point, but if you are looking for something more substantial than a basic handbag brolly then this is a great choice.
